Name: Robot Operating Buddy (R.O.B.)
Game/Series: Gyromite, Stack-Up
Age & Grade level: 23, Freshman (finishing up, I guess?)
Personality: ROB is a robot, and at first, he may seem like nothing more than a cold machine. However, he has much more lying within his circuits besides mere calculations and logic. His sheltered lifestyle among other ancient machines had grown uncomfortable for him, and he was compelled to leave. Now that he is out in society, he’s dead-set on learning as much information as his data banks can store. He’s very inquisitive, sometimes irritatingly so. He knows his boundaries, usually, but he doesn’t always pick up on body signals meant to inform him that he’s prying too much.
He takes things literally, being a very logical and linear thinker. He doesn’t understand modern, confusing slang, and will attempt to answer any rhetorical question you fire at him to the best of his ability. Jokes and slapstick humor usually fly right over his head, but he may let out a monotone chuckle if he realizes something was intended to be funny. If he watches someone slip on a banana peel, he’d be more likely to rush to their aid rather than point and laugh. After all, robots are built to serve.
This purpose is one of his greatest flaws. He knows all too well the difference between right and wrong, but the obedience programmed into him will keep him from doing what he knows is right if he’s been commanded to do otherwise. It is only when he has been pushed to his emotional limit that he’ll defy his commands and try to do the right thing, or at least fix whatever he might’ve broken.
ROB is compassionate, and more than capable of feeling emotions like happiness, sadness, guilt, anger, shame, etc. But it might take a while to realize this, due to the stoic disposition he usually bears. To his friends, he is loyal to a fault. To his enemies, he will always have the capacity to forgive. He doesn’t hold grudges, and would only pursue vengeance if it is completely justifiable.
All in all, ROB is a fire in an igloo. While cold and logical, emotion is not beyond his comprehension, and if you’re able to see past his metal and plastic casing, you will find a sentient, caring, feeling being. The “Buddy” in “Robotic Operating Buddy” isn’t just there for show, after all.
Background Information: This particular ROB is one of the first of his kind to be created by Professor Hector for the purpose of being a gaming companion. What the good Professor hadn’t anticipated was that the ROB units would become sentient, capable of independent thought and emotion, by some absurd fault in their programming. How remarkable! The friendly machines revived the dying video game industry by making them seem more appealing. How fun it was, to play a game with your own personal robot.
Unfortunately, even this marvel of mechanics became outdated and obsolete. As video games advanced, the ROBs remained relatively unchanged. The novelty of robotic friends wore off soon enough, and many ROBs were left homeless after being replaced by the latest consoles, with which they were not compatible.
Professor Hector was very distraught by the fate of his wonderful creations. They were his children. His pride and joy. He hated seeing them be cast aside so thoughtlessly. But he had no place in his lab to house and fuel the hundreds of thousands of robots that had been manufactured and abandoned.
But the Professor brainstormed, and it didn’t take long for him to devise a solution. The idea was so whimsical, it seemed like it wouldn’t work. A floating island that created its own energy, and energy to fuel all the ROB units that would inhabit it. But if he could create an independently thinking mind with the learning capacity equivalent to that of a human being, a levitating battery of an island would be a cakewalk to design.
Soon enough, the island had been constructed, and every ROB that had been left in the trash and landfills to rust out of existence had been located and placed on the island. With a tearful “Au Revior!”, Professor Hector launched the island to drift through the air indefinitely.
At first, none of the ROBs were sure what to do. They mulled around, stared at the sun, fed off of stray lightening bolts, and were generally at a loss for a purpose. But this ROB decided to take a stand. He rallied together his brethren, and was appointed as their leader. Under his command, the other robots constructed a marvelous society in which they prospered. The Isle of the Ancients, under the watchful LED receptors of the Ancient Minister, prospered.
But eventually, their drifting utopia was attacked, and their peaceful lives were torn asunder as evil forces took over. Their programming was hacked, and many sacrificed themselves for a cause that was unknown to them. They only obeyed their Minister. Unfortunately, his own motherboard had been hacked and trifled with. It wasn’t until hundreds of his fellow ROBs sacrificed themselves to act as keys to devastating bombs that he was able to break free from his orders and try to undo what he had done.
Eventually, the evil force was conquered, but the event left ROB emotionally scarred. Feeling that he had let his people down, he abandoned his status as Minister and left the Island, and what was left of his family, behind.
Now away from his past, he planed to move on in the future. The world didn’t seem all that eager about the out dated machine trying to make a comeback. But regardless, he persevered and tried to get involved in anything he could. He was involved in racing, for a brief time, but it grew dull for him quickly. Through the racetrack, he heard of a school meant to train people for fighting. Something that wouldn’t get repetitive and full of constant left turns. Now THAT sounded intriguing. After some research, he discovered the school and enrolled as soon as possible.
While at the school, SumaBura Gakuen, he made quite a few friends and had many learning experiences. Unfortunately, his past often haunted him, and it had corrupted his emotion chip much more than he realized. Mood swings were becoming frequent and startling, and his emotions were beginning to dominate his mind and override his rationality. It seemed to be getting worse every day. Before too much irreversible damage was done, ROB fled from SBG to find a way to fix himself.
He just so happened upon Professor Hector, who was both elated and confused at the sight of his old creation. But he eagerly consented to the robot’s request to be repaired. While there were plenty of friendly and trustworthy mechanics at the school, he felt that only his creator would truly be able to fix him.
Within weeks, ROB returned, now rid of confounding mood swings. Thankfully, he’s still able to enjoy emotions, without having them corrupt his logic and reasoning. His creator had also rid the robot of the bizarre, magic infused chip he had been using to turn himself human. The magic had an evil feel to it, and Hector was concerned it may undo his repairs. So, he had been thoughtful enough to install an internal switch ROB would be able to activate with a mere thought that would twist his form into that of a human. While his human form has been altered a little by the change, it seems more efficient, and ROB is pleased.
Anything Else?
- This is the same ROB that has been here.
- As stated, ROB transforms into his human shape via an internal switch.
- Changes made to his design can be seen
here. Changes/additions that aren’t visible there include: Normal human ears, normal human eyes hidden under “ROB eye” goggles, no cord (it’s also internal, wrapping around his “spine”), and he’s all around more organic.
- Still genderless and super a-sexual.
In-Character Example Post:
Hello, SumaBura. I apologize for not informing anyone that I would be leaving for a short time. I was in need of repairs and adjustments. I am aware that there are many mechanics present who are more than capable of performing the proper repairs I required. I hope none of the mechanics are offended by my not turning to them for help. I went to my original creator for both technical repairs and sentimental reasons.
I am pleased to inform my friends that I have been both repaired and upgraded. I feel more efficient, and I hope my friends think that my feelings are accurate.
Has anything notable occurred in my absence?
