Letting kids walk to school alone

I read Robin's and Alena's recent posts about leaving kids at home alone and it made me think of this question. At what age do you all think is OK for kids to walk/ride bicycles to school rather than being dropped off at school? For this example the school is less than a mile away from the children's home, they only cross one neighborhood street and there are sidewalks all the way.

I didn't want our boys walk to school yet although they have been asking for probably over a year. A is 8 and B is 9. A is a very immature 8 year old and his biggest challenge is listening. B is a very mature 9 (very intelligent, not street smart or anything). I thought me or my sister would take the boys to school until middle school (not really joking). So, all of this to tell you all that Dave has been home recovering from his hernia surgery and he started letting the boys walk to school. I was upset at first and I still worry. My sister assured me that it is different since Dave is home right now. As soon as he goes back to work I will be taking the boys to her house again for her to drop them off at school. I have to leave for work before they are allowed to be at school.

Do you guys think I am too protective? There are a lot of crazies everywhere, which is why I didn't want them walking but OTOH we have to let them grow up too. My babies are growing up way to fast.
