BEST VISUAL MAGAZINES
For me, this is a no-brainer. There are only two magazines I go out of my way to purchase with any regularity.
SHOXX
Shoxx is the kind of pretty, pretty magazine fans love. It has the big front-page spread for the current band flavor of the month with fabulous photo shoots, posters, and photo card gifts. Those things are great, but I like it for another reason, too. I love that they have full page ads for new band releases, as well as spread pages on releasess from stores like Tower Records and Like an Edison. Those are great ways to see what bands have new things coming up, or to scope out new bands to try. They also feature excellent articles, sometimes fluffy fun, but more often than not, you hear a band really discuss what went into a certain release concept. I love that. (I just wish I could read it without relying on translators!)
Rock and Read
I just discovered this magazine last year, but what a find! They don't feature more than a few musicians at a time, but wow! What features they are. Each issue has photo cards and spectacular photo shoots of your favorite musicians, often in unexpected ways. The photos are some of the best I've ever seen in a magazine shoot. Not only are the photos to die for, but the articles are intensely in-depth discussion with the featured artist. Again, I wish there were more translations of these articles out there, but with this much material in each issue, I certainly understand why there aren't. The recent Rock and Read eyes special issue was gorgeous, and I'm happy I got it.
