Remember When
“Remember when...”
It was a mark of their advancing years - or at least their long years together - how many of their conversations started this way, these days. To Buffy, it was also a testament to how they’d woven threads of normality into a far from mundane life.
The words were still infrequent enough that the misty shine of tearful nostalgia - tearful because she’d lived long enough to get to this point, and with the love-of-her-life, no less - had yet to wear off. She wiped her eyes, discreetly, before turning to Spike to reminisce alongside him over the song that had led to a kiss, so long ago. He hummed a few bars and she smiled. One of the benefits of his vampire constitution - memories didn’t fade.
“What?” she said, realizing he’d fallen silent.
“You.” His voice caught. “You’re beautiful.”
All these years, and her smile still did it for him. It made her breath catch in return, and her eyes get a little mistier.
No. No crying, not now. Teary-eyed wasn’t their style. Buffy shook her head, laughing at her own pretentions and the whopper of a lie she couldn’t even pretend to believe when Spike was doing the same, wiping at his eyes and disguising it as a yawn so deep it required a vigorous eye-rubbing.
“We’re idiots,” she said.
“Always have been.” He pulled her into him, tucking her head under his chin. “Remember when...”
