[Vriska had been standing just inside the entrance, heading back to her room after another night of roaming the island, when an inky black fog rolled out to greet her. If that wasn't a sign that Bad Things were happening here, the deafening sound of a hundred windows shutting and a hundred doors blowing open sure was ( ... )

[He can’t quite help it - every so often he glances back towards a window, out at the sky. He can’t see it, of course, but he knows it’s there, the awkward reminder of his - their - allegiance. Even though the Dark Lord’s power doesn’t seem to extend to this place, the sight of it, knowledge of it being there amongst the stars is enough to make him uneasy.

This isn’t something he wants to do, not really, but he’s hardly going to go against his father and aunt. It simply wasn’t done - and if this meant that they could leave the island, it hardly mattered, did it?

He grips his wand tightly, the soft blue light from the tip illuminating the way in front of him. He’s much happier - relatively speaking - to allow Lucius and Bellatrix to do most of the work, but he’s aware, painfully so, that reluctance isn’t any reason to not do what one ought. And standing besides one’s family was most certainly something that one ought to do ( ... )

[Through the fog she can see him -- tense, jumpy, and not much older than her. Good. So far she hadn't seen anything of what the adult humans were capable of, but she was sure she could handle someone her own age.

That wand, on the other hand...that made it hard to relax completely. Vriska hated to admit it, but she had no idea what he was capable of, either. No reason to worry, of course, because she was Vriska Serket and there was no way a human was taking her down.

Still, she clenches her dice in her fist.]

Please. Does it look like I'm hiding?

[She tilts her head, smirking, her voice light and her posture relaxed. She'd be the picture of composure if not for the way her eyes are trained on his wand hand.]

[When he sees her, he stops walking and runs his eyes over her, judging her. His lips curl at the sight of her horns, although he can’t seem to drag his attention away from them. He’s familiar with a multitude of magical creatures, naturally, but he’s not certain he’s ever seen anything quite like her before. The fact that she looks young - younger than him - doesn’t quite help, but not in the sense that he cares for her age, makes him less willing to act, it’s the fact that whatever she is can look so much like a young teenager. He’d never really considered it before, somehow assuming that creatures - like the oafish halfwit, Hagrid - had always managed to look noticeably apart from them.

It is, in other words, somewhat disconcerting.

That aside, he doesn’t quite miss the way she’s eyeing his wand, and that in turn makes him feel more at home. Even if he’s not familiar with her, she’s familiar enough with wizards and magic to know to take care. This’d be easier - no, simpler - than he’d imagined.]You would, if you knew what was ( ... )

let me know if this isn't all right! scourgesister September 20 2011, 22:12:04 UTC
[There's barely enough time for Vriska to come up with a witty retort before the light is flying her way, and certainly not enough time to dodge -- her wings are fast, but not fast enough. She falls onto her back, hard, eyes wide as she struggles uselessly against the spell. As if getting hit point-blank like an idiot wasn't bad enough, now she couldn't even move? God, talk about humiliating.

But out of the corner of her eye Vriska spots a small bit of consolation: she hadn't hit the ground alone. Her dice fell with her, thanks to the spell forcing her fists open. She couldn't see what they'd landed on...]

3 + 4 + 5 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 7 + 1: ARACHNOFEVER

[...but she isn't left wondering for long. From behind Draco, she can see a blue glow creeping up through the fog, accompanied by a rustling noise. It's a very familiar sound: the distinct shuffling of spiders' legs. Lots of them, from the sound of it. A wave of spectral blue spiders work their way closer, coating the floor as they skitter down the hall. Usually Vriska would be ( ... )

[A smug smile settles on his lips for a moment, although it shifts into quizzical curiosity at the dice on the ground. He’s not seen anything like them before, and from his experience, people don’t tend to carry about miscellaneous objects just because - unless, he supposes, they have sentimental value.

He doesn’t have much time to consider that, though, as the sound of legs, lots of legs, becomes audible - and quickly. He lifts his head, attention swiftly returning to Vriska, expression plainly fearful. He doesn’t have a fear of spiders, not at all, but he doesn’t know what these ones can do and not knowing, being ignorant, is something he detests, something he automatically tries to mask with false bravado and egotism. He starts to back away from the spiders, being very careful to step around - not near; she’s not human, he doesn’t know how effective his spells will be on her in the long run - Vriska, placing her between him and the spiders ( ... )

[Oh, if only she could pull off the smug look she's dying to give him right now. Then again, if she could move, she'd do a lot more than just smirk. She'd scoop up her dice and try to roll again while his guard was down, or lunge at him with her bare hands, or...no. There's a small voice telling her that hey, violent urges do not help put a history full of violence to rest, better cut that out. And then there's a much more familiar voice that reminds her of just how much easier it was when she didn't waste time holding back, when she didn't care about any of that sappy bullshit --

At least the immobility is good for one thing: they help her keep a mean poker face. Not that the spiders care what her expression looks like. They crawl on blindly regardless, over her legs, her hands, her face, narrowly missing her eyes. Spiders everywhere, just like home. She'd laugh if she could.

There's a loud hiss just a little too close to her head, as a cluster of spiders are hit and evaporate in a blue fog. Stupid, lousy, pointless things couldn ( ... )

[The bright light was enough to have Nezumi's eyes snapping open, but the sudden slamming of the door open, despite the locks, is what had him throwing back the covers on his bed and jumping out. He snatched the switchblade from his pocket and darted over to kneel beside the door, gave a soft command to the chorus of tittering cheeps from the mice, and watched them dart out the door, going in both directions.

A cautious glance revealed a pitch black hall as he listened to the broadcast from the psycho on the phone. So it's a different kind of manhunt then. Fine.

He pushed away from the door and stumbled to his boots, began to yank them on hastily.]

Shion! Get your shoes on - we need to get the hell outta here.

[That said, he snatched up both cloak and jacket and stepped right up to the sliding-glass door and kicked as hard as he could.

It flexed, but didn't break.

He snarled softly, took a few steps back, then ran forward and kicked it again.]

[ Shion awoke instantly, glancing at the strange green light that filtered from the sky. The strange cloud formation was foreboding. Some of the inhabitants here truly had some unusual capabilities. The boy was already one step ahead, slipping into his shoes quickly and already running through escape plans in his head. ]

Nezumi! The chair!

[ He's already shifting towards the chair at the fireplace. The chair would be able to create a greater force that could break whatever field that was keeping them in. ]

[That kick should have done the trick, yet the door was still intact - yet it didn't look like shatter-proof glass. Shion's words had him turning to look, instantly catching the other teen's meaning, though he had to wonder if the green light had anything to do with it, and if so, just what kind of power these other people had to manage such things. For the moment, however, he simply stepped back to grab one side of the chair to help move it closer.]

Just pull it back and throw as hard as you can.

Yeah.

[ Something was reinforcing the glass so the logical conclusion was to exert greater force. If the chair didn't work they would have to look for another exit.

One. Two. Three--

And Shion flung the chair with all his might at the sliding doors. ]

[As did Nezumi.

It crashed into the door with a resounding clatter, then fell to the floor. The door, however, remained intact. Nezumi cursed under his breath, then nodded to the fireplace.]

See if the chimney is big enough for us to fit in there and I'll check the hall. Either way, that's too loud. We've probably drawn attention, so we need to move!

[ Not even a scratch on the glass. Even that wasn't enough to shatter the doors. Were these strangers carrying some sort of device--No, there was no time to sit and dwell on the strange barrier.

Shion rushed to the chimney to check it as a possible route for escape. Ducking under the fireplace, he peered up the dark shaft. It was pitch black with no sign of an end. Either way, the chimney was too small for them to fit through.

A chimney escape was a no go. ]

The fireplace won't work, we won't fit and it's too dark to see if it leads out.

[Of course, that'd be too easy. Nezumi's gaze hardened, his hearing strained towards the hallway, but even with all of his focus and superior night vision, he still couldn't see very far. He bit back a snarl and reached out to grab Shion's hand.]

Means we can't use any of the normal exits so lets make for the laundry room. I know of a way out there. Don't let go and don't fall behind. Stay as quiet as you can.

[A beat as his hand tightened its grip.]

Ready, Shion?

Reply

tatarticus September 14 2011, 18:32:34 UTC
Yeah.

[ Shion gives Nezumi's hand a squeeze of affirmation. It seemed the laundry room was their last option. There weren't many inhabitants on the first floor of the East dormitory. If the intruders were searching the rooms in order, they didn't have much time left. ]

I'm ready.
