A couple weeks ago we recorded a new song for a school project. We're really happy with the quality and the song. So,I get this idea in my head that Chris from Less Than Jake should sing on the song. I start thinking about it more and more and I realize it's not that crazy. On Thursday night I find Chris on myspace and I send him a message basically just saying how we played with them and worked merch for them and how LTJ is all of our favorite band. I knew it was a long shot, but literally ten minutes later I get a phone call from an unknown number. It's Chris from Less Than Jake. He tells me he's totally down to do the song, but he leaves for tour on Monday to Australia. I scramble and book a studio for Saturday at noon. Chris says that's fine and just says to send him the song and he'll be there at noon.
I am so proud of our band. We all called each other to make sure everyone was awake. Mark picked up Jeff and I and we sat just how we sat on tour. We brought back up copies of the cd and left on time. We get to Emerald City Studios around 11:50. The studio was awesome and the engineer was a really nice lady. We're all just sitting and waiting and just nervously anxious and right at twelve Chris comes into the studio. He is the friendliest, nicest dude we have ever gotten to meet.He was just hanging out and joking with us. Joe was three minutes late for the first time ever.
Another surreal moment; Chris and Joe go into the studio and get right to work on the song. Poor Joe was so nervous and I know singing in front of Chris is tough. Mark, Jeff and I were all just kind of hanging out and then we hear Chris singing the words to our song. We just stopped and looked at each other. I mean it was probably the craziest thing that has ever happened. He sings through it a couple of times and then goes into record it. He sang the part four times and just nailed it. He has such a distinct voice and it was amazing. Watching Chris in the studio sing a song we wrote. He didn't make a big deal about it and said he liked the song. He was just hanging with us and talking about tour. He shook all of our hands, took a picture in front of the mixing board and then took off. The whole thing took about thirty minutes, but it is without a doubt the coolest thing I've ever had the privilege of doing. He definitely did not have to do that, but we as a band have exceeded all of our won expectations. In celebration, we sat in the tracker tour style and drove around the block sharing a beer and listening to the song. Get Chris from Less Than Jake to sing on Amberly Drive song; check.
