I'm seriously considering playing much less poker going forward. My results have been terrible for about six months now and poker is not fun at all for me right now. So, what the hell should I do with myself? I have enough money that I don't need to find an income right away, though I will have to find one at some point. I would love to start or ( Read more... )

do you think i fit the profile of people they hire? i honestly don't know.

I don't really have a solid idea of what their profile is. But when you say "I like numbers and games and competition and problem solving" I think cryptography. Of course there are private sector areas for that as well.

I think you are spot on about twenty-somethings going to grad school because they can't come up with anything better to do. Or they don't really like their job, and they think another degree is the solution to that problem. I am 29 and am doing pretty well without a grad degree. The guy who runs my consulting group has bachelor's in something like Art History, and no grad work to speak of ( ... )

So, I work in a small "product strategy" consulting group - that is part of a big IT services firm. We work for a variety of different clients, almost exclusively in the tech sector. Most of our work is primary research on behalf of our clients. A simlpe example would be a software company that is facing some competitive threat in a specific region. They hire us to interview users of their product and users of the competitor's product. We try to accumulate data to improve the client's strategy ( ... )

Most fun jobs, as a rule, don't pay well unless you are at the very top of that profession. Actors, professional athletes, etc. One exception is poker players, where fairly mediocre ones still make pretty good livings. So although you may feel your job sucks now, I wonder if there are a great deal of other options that are more enjoyable and pay as well. Especially at the age of 27 and with not much work experience and schooling. I get tired of poker too, and running bad sucks, but even at my worst I think it's better than most jobs. But obviously if you hate it and aren't making money at it, then it's probably time to change. You are too good a player to keep losing money at it, though.

How about financial markets? That's one high-paying job that seems to fit in with the things you say you like.

thank you, but what evidence do you have for this proposal? i am questioning it lately. i'm not a bad player, but i'm not sure i'm any good either. i'm not just moping, srsly.

you make good points about poker. i just can't beat any game lately. what would you recommend? i can deal with running bad but what i'm in the middle of is not just running bad. i mostly hate it because i've been losing for six months. i realize that it's a great job compared to the other options, so i don't have to love it all the time to keep doing it.

financial jobs are drawing very live if i leave poker. i am not a fan of early starts/long hours but other than that, it's a good fit.

I actually really like having gone back to school. Granted, I went back for my bachelors, but I took grad school classes too. It definitely opens up more possibilities later. But I also like learning and engaging in class seminars and the like - so I am a geek.

As for a job that's suited to your interests, my friend Bill Chen works for Susquehana, www.susq.com and you might be suited to go in as a trader. From what Bill says, there is a high potential to earn money and they value poker players.

i don't mind learning and the classroom environment if it's something i'm interested in. but what is it that i'm interested in? sigh.

if i decide to look into financials, i will get in touch with bill. thanks.
