Contains spoilers for D.Gray-Man storyline

Abandoned as a child for his 'defected' hand, Allen was adopted by Mana Walker on December 25th when he was roughly seven. He grew up traveling to several different countries with Mana, helping out with Mana's career as a performer to get by just barely. When Allen was about ten, Mana passed away on Christmas Eve. Devastated by losing the only person who loved him, young Allen struck up a deal with the Millennium Earl to bring back Mana, unaware of the concept of Akuma. The Earl brought Mana back as an Akuma, but instead of taking over Allen's body, Mana cursed his adopted son with the ability to see the souls trapped within an akuma. At that point his left hand, an anti-akuma weapon, activated for the first time, destroying Mana out of instinct. At that point out of shock from being cursed and destroying his father, Allen's hair turned to snow white and remains that color to the present day.

Soon after that, Allen was discovered by Marian Cross. Cross explained to him what had happened that night. That by destroying the Akuma of Mana, he was doing what he was destined to do and there was nothing else he could of done. He then took Allen on as his apprentice and trained him to be an exorcist. The training took several years, and did a lot to scar Allen's psyche. Like the first part of his life, he continued to travel. But unlike Mana, Cross would mooch off of friends and his many lovers. Allen, performing the roll of student, spent a good part of his time working to pay off Cross's debts. He would even go as far to gamble when money was too tight, becoming a professional at cheating in cards. When Allen was fifteen, Cross decided he was ready to become an official exorcist. He told Allen to go to the Order of the Black Order's headquarters, and proceeded to knock Allen out so he wouldn't have to go along.

After many months of traveling, Allen finally reached the headquarters of the Black Order. The initial welcome was far from warm, for the door mistook him to be in league with the Earl because of his curse. This is where he met Kanda Yuu, who attempted to kill him. Fortunately, this misunderstanding was cleared up before Allen lost his life. Afterwards, he was welcomed into the headquarters as an exorcist.

Allen was sent on several missions over the course of a few months in Order to retrieve the mysterious substance called Innocence in various parts of the world. Noteworthy ones was his first mission to Matel where he and Kanda where they encountered Lala; as well as to a city in Germany that kept repeating the same day for a month with Rinali, where they met Miranda, encountered their first Noah, and Allen temporary lost his eye.

Following the events of the rewinding city, Allen met Ravi and Bookman while recovering in the hospital. Soon after recovering (except for his eye that was still healing) he was sent on a long term mission with Ravi, Bookman, and Rinali to locate Marian Cross, his former master. The search sent the group across the landmass of Eurasia with nothing more but leads and clues to where the man had traveled to. Along the way, they picked up Crowley in a village in Romania and Allen's eye healed to be even more powerful than before when sensing Akuma.

When they reached China, Allen's time on the mission was cut short. He encountered Suman, an exorcist that due to his treason against the Black Order, was having his Innocence judge him and destroying him. Allen decided to stop this from happening, and nearly succeeded -- if it had not been for Tyki Mikk. The Noah killed Suman instantly, and then proceeded to destroy Allen's Innocence (aka, his left arm) and tear a hole in his heart. He was then left for dead.

Luckily Allen did not die. Fou, guardian of the Black Order Headquarters China Branch, came across Allen's body and carried him back to their headquarters. And then by some miracle, the small amount of Innocence that was left in him patched up the hole in his heart -- ensuring his survival. But much to his despair, he could no longer be an exorcist without his left arm.

Yet Allen refused to accept that fate, saying that being an exorcist was the only path for him and he refused to do anything but keep moving. So along with Fou and Bak, they worked together, trying several different methods to bring back his Innocence into weapon form. All of them proved unsuccessful, and it wasn't until a Level 3 Akuma sent by Tyki came did the results change. Allen, realizing he had lost sight of his original goal of saving the souls trapped in the Akuma, and he made a vow to save everyone -- human and akuma for both were precious to him. And from this realization, he received his arm and weapon back - this time in it's fully activated form called "Clown Crown".

New anti-akuma form in hand, Allen set off for Edo using a portal that the Level 3 Akuma set up for him. He arrived there in time to save Rinali from the Earl, and had a happy reuniting moment with his friends (and less than happy with Kanda). But this was cut short by the group being dragged into the Ark - the place under the Earl's control and a factory for Akuma. On top of this, it was an Ark that was being destroyed. The group had only a few hours to escape it. Traveling as fast as they can, they ran into Skin Boric. Before they could all fight him, Kanda told the others to move on without him, and he would take care of it. After some arguing, they complied. Rinali, Ravi, Crowley, a sailor named Chaoji and Allen continued further into the ark until they came across Debitt and Jasdero - Noahs who were left with debts from Cross.

And like every other person with debts from Cross, they decided to make Allen pay for it. Which started with another fight, they fought for awhile, stuff happened and soon Crowley decided to fight them alone so the others could go on and get out of here. Allen, saddened that he was now leaving two teammates behind, had no choice but to comply and Ravi, Rinali, Chaoji and Allen went ahead without Crowley. They continued on ahead until they came across Rhode (who kissed him, ew DX) and Tyki. After a bit of talk that this mun needs to reread - they started to fight. Rhode versus Ravi in her own twisted illusion mind game, and Allen versus Tyki.

The battle between Tyki and Allen went better than the time before, however Allen was still not strong enough to defeat the man in his Clowned Clown claw form. When Tyki traps him in an oxygen free sphere, Allen in order to live pushes his syncho rate with his Innocence higher and higher until it hits over 100%. Back at headquarters, this causes all the other Innocence to react and informs them that there is possibly a new General out there (lololol). Back at the Ark, Allen's Innocence arm transforms into a giant sword. With this new form, he easily escapes out of the sphere and manages to slash and stab Tyki Mikk with the sword. But with the swords special ability, he manages to only damage the Noah part of Tyki and not the human part. He falls to the ground unconscious, and Rhode loses her temper; surrounding them all with her killer candlesticks and threatening to kill them if they do anything before she's finished with Ravi.

Meanwhile some awesome stuff happens with Ravi where she tries to destroy his heart. She nearly succeeds, and he awakes from the mind game with something that claims to be only Bookman controlling him. He starts to attack Allen, and Allen is incapable to attacking his friend - even going so far as hugging him and pleading to hear his voice. None of the attempts work, and Ravi continues to attack him. It seems hopeless when Ravi throws one his inferno techniques at Allen and the others, until they notice that the flames aren't hurting them and was instead melting the candlesticks around them. As it turned out, Ravi tricked the Bookman part to believe that he destroyed the heart, and he manages to defeat Rhode's mind game once and for all - while setting the area around him on fire. Allen in a BFF move, leaps into the inferno and saves Ravi from burning up - both of them coming out anti-climatically screaming at how hard it was to breath, how hot, and then laughing/bickering at the same time.

After this, they nearly reach the door that will take them out of there. Allen plan was to have Rinali, Ravi and Chaoji escape - and then he would go back searching for Crowley and Kanda since he could move the best out of any of them. But then Allen's over compassion kicks in, and he finds himself unable to leave the conscious body of Tyki behind - since he's human and has human friends out there who would be sad. Chaoji gets pissed at this idea, and says that Allen is a devil just like Tyki. However - their fight gets interrupted by no other than Tyki himself. Turns out Allen didn't managed to kill his Noah side so much as make the guy's Noah side go crazy (whoops). He begins to attack them with a whole new power. Stuff happens, and they pretty much get their asses kicked even with Chaoji activating Innocence for the first time.

At this point, Cross finally steps in. He easily defeats Tyki, and the Earl shows up to retrieve him. However this is all not fast enough, and the room that they are in begins to destroy itself - making Ravi and Chaoji fall to their supposed deaths (And causing Allen to do a scream that Crisis Core Cloud would be proud of). In a rage, Allen tries to fight the Earl and Cross stops him. Earl escapes, and Cross says he needs Allen to stop the download of the Ark. He is sent to a room where a piano is, as well as an inverted reflection he saw long before in a dream - calling him "The Musician". As it turns out, he has the ability to play a song on the piano - even though he had never touched a piano in his life beyond "that one time with the clown" (I'm assuming just random childhood memory) - that controls the Ark. The musical score for this song (that was in Timcanpy) is written in a language of symbols - one that Mana had taught him when he was young as a game. This stops the Ark's download, reverts it back to it's original state, saves all of the Exorcists and leaves Allen entirely confused about who and what he is.

They head back to headquarters using the Ark, and everyone has a happy reunion. Except for Allen who while happy to see everyone again - is troubled by the Musician abilities he possesses. This only becomes worse when the higher ups in the Black Order begin to become suspicious as well, and put him under investigation, having Howard Link monitoring him at all times. He is also forbidden to have contact with his Master. And to top it all off, Allen begins to see the inverted reflection in any mirror he comes across that no one else can see. But he tells no one of this reflection thing, and tries his best to ignore it. He also starts to befriend Link.

But this is all interrupted when Lulubel the Noah attacks Headquarters to recover a part of the Ark. Stuff happens, I really need to reread these chapters - Allen is able to destroy the egg before it is taken and Lulubel runs off somewhere. But the battle is far from over when one of the Level 3 Akuma that were with her manages to evolve and become a full out Level 4 - which kicks Allen's ass. Stuff happens with Rinali, Allen continues to attempt to fight it, and isn't having much luck. Rinali finally gets her boots back, and between her, Allen and Cross - they managed to defeat the Level 4 Akuma. Half of the Science Department is killed in these battles, along with other members of the Order. Allen himself sustain heavy injuries and is pretty much thrashed - and he blames himself for not being able to save everyone who got hurt/killed.

After the attack, Cross leaves to go have a conference with the Black Order about the current situation under the deal that he would get to speak to Allen too. Allen stays behind in headquarter to recover and help move things to a new headquarters. He informs Reever, Komui and Link that he has no idea what is in his head with the musician business, but he finds it gross that Mana possibly put something in his head that he didn't know about. He wants nothing more than to talk to his Master and have him tell Allen that it's still okay to trust Mana. And while he is helping move things in the Science Department at 2am, he falls asleep and trips into a pile of things - and lands on a hair-growing potion. This makes his white hair even longer, a better fate than Bookman whose hair is currently bunny ears.

Then the lights shut off, and they started hearing a creepy laughter that they couldn't identify where it was from. Allen assumed it was Komui just doing some weird joke, and then the door started opening and-

That's the last thing that Allen recalls in Paradisa.
