Filler

I finished reading Mirror by Graham Masterton tonight, and as with the other two of his books that I've already read, it was great.  It's a horror story about a Hollywood writer who buys a mirror that once belonged to a murdered 1930s child star called Boofuls, whose story he's pretty much obsessed with.

THE NEXT BIT CONTAINS SPOILERS

I've been racking my brain trying to think of things that I didn't like about about this book, and could only think of one - a passage where he writes about some vomit. I didn't like this bit because I tend to picture thing vividly, and a strong gag reflex, and tend to picture nauseating things in great detail. Other than that, there really isn't anything. I read one review on Amazon that mentioned the lack of female characters, and that the few that are in this book seem to described by breast size, and that should probably should bother me, but it didn't. One of them ends up as one of the heroes of sorts at the end of the book, and is fleshed out. And in the other two books of his that I've read, females play a large part in the story.

And so on to the bits I liked about this book. I found the plot interesting, and found the story rather scary in places, which is always welcome. I particularly loved the integration of Lewis Carroll's Alice books into the plot - I read them both as a  child, and I still love them today. I loved the use of the religious theme in the story too - despite not being religious myself I enjoy the idea of ancient biblical evils and faith in horror writing.

I definitely recommend reading this book, as I found it incredibly entertaining, and I'm sad that I've now finished it. Will have to find another one of his at the local library.

I'm finally going to get started on that Jane Austen now. I was, as mentioned in the previous post going to read both books at the same time, but I knew that I wouldn't be able to really concentrate on and appreciate either like this. So I didn't do it. I will therefore post again when I've read Pride and Prejudice. Not that I'll be reviewing it, because it's a classic, and it's all been done before. Plus I know for certain that I'm going to love it.
