Fandom+real life

Last night throwingpens and I went out and met up with my some of my real life friends.

My friend was having a birthday party at a country bar and I went ahead and invited Amber. Q, The birthday girl was super late, so we got to sit and discuss fandom thing before everyone else showed up.

One of the girls was a friend of mine from high school, W. We chatted about a bunch of things, including how we'd pass her copy of Harry Potter back and forth during driver's ed back in the day. She was also entirely certain she recognized Amber; from real life, or at least from my facebook. Amber was pretty insistent this wasn't the case.

Then my high school friend referred to herself as my "nerd friend."

"Oh yeah," I said, because life's boring without a little danger. "She's such a nerd, that back in high school, she used to write Harry Potter fan fic."

"It's true," she said shame-facedly. "And Diaphenia used to be my editor."

"What was that called?" I asked. "Betaing, right?"

"Beta like alpha, beta?" Amber asked. She was side-eyeing me, and HSF didn't even notice.*

A minute later, HSF asked me, "You liked The Hunger Games, right?"

I thought Amber was going to spit-take.

But she kept her cool, and the two of them discussed the ending of Mockingjay.

All in all, it was a successful evening. Amber mixed just fine with my real life friends, and it was nice to have some confirmation from my internet friend that the stuff I say about my friends is accurate and not an exaggeration. For instance, BG took off her dress and danced in her slip. Not an exaggeration! I made friends in the bathroom by talking about the fiscal cliff. Not an exaggeration! Shenanigans are how I do, really.

*She may have noticed, in that later she implied Amber and I were dating.
