So I've started reading the Sandman comics, written by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by some other people whose names escape me. It's published by DC comics, under their Vertigo division and one of the few comics to hit the NY Bestsellers list.
But that's information you can Wiki yourself.
Well the art in most American graphic novels leaves a lot to be desired, I find the somewhat rough depictions of the series' eponymous protagonist (also sometimes called Morpheus and is always Dream) somewhat fascinating. Wiki quotes that Gaiman crafted the new character from an initial image of "'a man, young, pale and naked, imprisoned in a tiny cell, waiting until his captors passed away [...] deathly thin, with long dark hair, and strange eyes.'"
The comics further describe Dream's eyes as "dark as the night sky, with the light of twin stars." Another character also described his robes as "woven from the night itself."
How could I resist?
Possibly the fastest digital painting ever, although that's saying little, since I slow as anything when it comes to digital painting. It took three evenings, although the face was mostly finished in the first day. The hair did give me some trouble. But I confess that I cheated, since the initial concept was to have him fade into the background somewhat. Hence, many details were omitted, ignored, and unnecessary. The ruby did give me some trouble, and in the end, I opted for a rougher, simpler cut stone than is mass marketed nowadays, and I still rather like the idea that Dream would create something that's not ideal.
