Theoretical financial stuff

So I'm trying to determine how much money I would need if I were to theoretically try to take a 2 week vacation to England.    Airfare is easy to figure out, but the other expenses are the tricky parts.  I can look up Air + Hotel package details on Orbitz, Expedia, and Travelocity, but that isn't ideal.  It would not be my intent to spend 2 weeks ( Read more... )

I know that feeling -- I didn't travel anywhere other than Canada until we went to Paris when I was 33! A trip to England sounds amazing -- I hope you are able to make it happen!

Bob and I are currently planning a trip to Italy for this October (Florence and Venice) and I've been finding a lot of helpful resources on the Slow Travel Website. Even if you aren't planning to travel particularly "slow" (ie stay in one place for several days and/or rent an apartment) it has a lot of great info, and (one of my favorite parts) trip reports.

There's a special section for the UK and Ireland, which is not quite as busy as the Italy and France sections, but still has a lot of info.

It's my general impression that no matter where you go, you can get by without spending a ton on food if you are willing to just eat cheap street food (we ate a lot of baguette sandwiches and crepes in Paris) and go into local markets/stores to get picnic fixings and the like, rather than eating in sit down restaurants.

If you want to really save money, you could check out couch surfing or hostels...
