This is a true story...

The weekend started off with one unbelievable occurrence after another...and when I tell this story, let me make it clear that none of what I am about to write is embellished in any way...this is the true story, of two girls who are madly in love, and plan to spend the rest of their lives together, and who go through obstacle after obstacle to get there...

Wednesday night, Tess departs for the greyhound station to come stay with me until Saturday night to take care of me after my oral surgery on Friday morning. She was scheduled to arrive Thursday afternoon at 3pm. But I get a call Wednesday night with Tess telling me that she was not allowed on the bus...the bus was too full...yes, we had purchased tickets weeks in advance, but that didn't matter...the bus driver wouldn't let her on the bus and told her to come back "around 6am" the next morning to get on the next bus. He initials her ticket and writes "ok to travel"...oh gee, that sounds really official! Strike one...

Thursday morning she gets back to the bus station around 5:30am, goes into the station at 6am to find the bus will be coming at 6:50 and her tickets will be honored despite the different day and time listed. She calls me to tell me this and my spirits are lifted...yes, she won't get to Chicago until 10:45pm the night before my surgery, but at least she was coming...right??? She calls me an hour and a half later saying the bus still hasn't shown up yet. Then she finds out it's because it's running late due to a new driver not knowing what he's doing. This lateness means it will be hard for her to make the transfer in Columbus, OH, to get to her final destination...me! Strike two...

The bus finally shows up and she gets on. We feel relief but text throughout the morning, worried she will miss her transfer. She is stuck on a bus with a crazy driver who she thought was going to kill them all multiple times, an overcrowded (15 people standing in the aisles because this driver did let the bus overfill)...and the passengers are irate, threatening to start a riot, and the bus is so late it can't make any stops for food, smoking, or bathroom breaks. I call Tess on my lunch break to have her tell me the driver said they are running so behind that there is a good chance they will not make the bus in Columbus...and this is the only bus all day from Columbus to Chicago, so if that happens, she would be stuck in Columbus until the next day. Strike three...

Yeah...fuck you greyhound! So I raced through all my work that day like a mad woman, asked my boss if I could leave work 4 hours early, to go and rescue my girlfriend from Columbus Ohio. In the end, she did make the bus, but I had already started driving so I met her at a stop in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, so at least we could spend a few extra hours together before my surgery...even if they were in a car...we always seem to be in a car! But it was worth it.

We overcome anything and everything that is thrown our way, and I know that we will continue to do so. Things are hard for us sometimes, as a couple, and individually, but the reward is worth it, all of it. To have her here with me, in the waiting room as I got done with my surgery, to cuddle up with and watch tv and movies, to have her make sure I could eat wherever we went, mashing up my food for me in an effort to make sure I wouldn't hurt my mouth...just being able to look deep into her eyes and feel her skin against mine, is all I could ever ask for.

And in the end, she was able to stay a whole extra day with me :) It was a wonderful reward, and I know that the next time I see her, I will be coming to Virginia to take her home with me...for good this time. No more greyhound bus station goodbyes.
