Author:
satine_1984Title: Fall of Reason
Genre: Angst/Romance
Rating: G - NC-17 (It depends on the chapter)
Word Count: ?
Character Pairings: Luke/Reid, most likely Reid/OC, Luke/OC in between
Other Characters: Katie, Jacob, Casey, Bob, Noah, Chris, Lily, Natalie, a few OC’s, possibly other Oakdale citizens
Warnings: There’s smut. A lot of angst but don’t worry, there will be a happy ending. It’s going to be a long way to happiness for Lure, though, and Reid can be quite an ass sometimes. New characters will be getting involved. Noah, the douche, might also get negatively involved but if and how is not sure yet.
Disclaimer: I own nothing.
Summary: Luke has broken up with Noah and finds himself being drawn into a passionate affair with the surgeon he had actually learned to hate.
Set right after 16th /17th March episode when Reid was beat up by Dennis Judd. The story starts with the scene where Reid visits Luke’s home for the first time to ask him to keep quiet about what happened at the Lakeview but you will notice this scene will have a slightly different ending! ;-)
A/N: The other person on the cover is the American actor David Giuntoli. I used him as an inspiration for my character, Daniel Logan, which I have created for this story. If you happen to know this actor pretty well, you need to know that I didn’t choose him for his appearances on television but mainly for his looks as I’d love to give you a vague idea of how Daniel Logan would look like in my imagination.
This is a multichaptered fic and will be updated regularly. I intend to post once a week, since I’ve already written a few chapters ahead. After a while it might take a little longer.
This is my very first Lure fic and unfortunately English is not my first language. Please be kind. :-)
Speaking of language I definitely need to thank my lovely beta-girls
BlueCactus03 and
Fremi08 for their suggestions and support and another big thank you to
lucsmum, who has given me good advice dealing with smut.
I hope you’re gonna enjoy reading my story and I’d be so happy if you give me your Feedback.
Chapter 4
Luke jumped back from the doctor as if he’d been stung by a wasp.
“Heey Natalie. Glad you’re home. Uhm…where’s mum?” He quickly burst out while running his hand through his still messed up hair.
Natalie just looked at Luke, then curiously at Doctor Oliver, then back at Luke. “Mum is…”
"Luke?” Luke jerked inwardly when he heard his mother calling his name from outside. “Luke, are you th-,” Lily, who had just appeared on the doorstep with a whole bunch of shopping bags, stopped abruptly, looking confused at the unexpected visitor in her house.
“Mum…hi. I’m here with…Doctor Oliver.” Luke tried to sound casual but his shaky voice betrayed him. To his relief, his mother didn’t seem to notice, her mind probably being full with her own problems once again.
"I see.” Lily said slowly, turning her attention to the older man. “Hello Doctor Oliver. It is…nice to see you again."
"Ms Walsh.” Doctor Oliver answered curtly.
Luke groaned inwardly. Of course there was not even a single uncertainty in the doctor’s voice. He carefully studied the older man’s face, searching for any hint of emotion…but got nothing. How did he do that?!
"Hello Doctor Oliver, I'm Natalie." Luke’s little sister said politely, holding out her small, outstretched hand.
Luke was glad that all the attention was on Doctor Oliver right now. Closing his eyes for a few seconds, he tried to calm down his racing heart. Don’t panic, Luke. Just…don’t panic! But that was certainly easier said than done. He needed Doctor Oliver to leave as quickly as possible, as his presence at his mum’s house would certainly lead to a whole bunch of questions.
Despite his angst, he almost had to smile though when he watched the surgeon carefully studying his little sister in front of him, looking like he was afraid she might bite. Luke wasn’t at all surprised to see that kind of reaction from him. He never expected the distant and logical doctor to be a kid’s person after all. He remembered how cold he’d been about the Annie Judd case and given the fact how he treated people in general, he probably wouldn’t treat kids very differently.
But just when Luke thought he would just ignore his sister’s polite greeting, a small, genuine smile appeared on Doctor Oliver’s face and he finally took her hand, shaking it.
"It is nice to meet you, Natalie."
“Are you a real doctor?” She asked him eagerly, her eyes growing as if Santa Claus himself was standing in front of her.
“Yes I am.”
“But where is your stethoscope?”
“At work, of course.”
“Can I show you mine? I’ve got one too and I even have a blood pressure meter, which I got last Christmas. I want to be a nurse some day and…”
“A nurse?” Doctor Oliver let go of Natalie’s hand, looking disgusted. “Why would you wanna be a nurse? Most of them are stupid and a complete waste of time. If you want my advice I think you’d..”
“I don’t think she needs your advice, Doctor Oliver.” Lily interrupted him while putting her bags down on the floor. “I don’t want to be rude or anything but what are you doing here? Weren't you supposed to fly back to Texas with Noah today?"
Doctor Oliver flashed Lily an annoyed look but before he could answer, Luke quickly stepped in.
“I also thought he was, mum, but Doctor Oliver has decided to stay in Oakdale and will continue to treat Noah at Memorial.”
“Really?” Lily’s lips turned into a bright smile. “Oh that is wonderful! Did you hear that Natalie? Noah’s going to stay in Oakdale.”
But Natalie didn’t respond. Her eyes were fixed on the older man in front of her, a deep frown forming on her young face.
"YOU are Noah's doctor?” She burst out, utterly surprised. “But I always thought you were ugly."
Doctor Oliver looked down at the little girl, furrowing a brow. "Why would you think that?"
"Luke told me you're a jerk and in my belief jerks are ugly."
“Is that so?” Doctor Oliver asked, turning around to look directly at Luke.
Luke quickly averted the man’s gaze, blushing furiously.
Kids…always creating awkward moments by spilling out the truth. Under any other circumstances Luke wouldn’t have cared what his little sister just said. In fact he would have stuck by his opinion, would have thrown in another insult maybe...Doctor Oliver was a jerk after all, but considering what just had happened between them, feeling the surgeon’s eyes on him now made him want to run and hide. Biting his lip he tried to concentrate on his little sister who was still looking at the surgeon with wondrous eyes.
Eventually the doctor turned his attention to Natalie again. “That’s a really interesting theory you got there.”
“Natalie, that’s enough!” Lily stepped in. “Doctor Oliver, I’m sorry. She doesn’t know what she’s saying.”
“Do you want to know a secret?” Doctor Oliver asked Natalie, ignoring Lily’s statement completely.
Natalie’s eyes grew big and she nodded eagerly, as Doctor Oliver crouched down so he’d be on eye level with her.
“Most jerks are pretty handsome, actually.” The doctor whispered, but it was just loud enough for everyone to hear.
“Really?” Natalie whispered back.
“Really really… And I suggest you’d make it your life rule not to fall for one.”
“I won’t. I’m smart you know?”
Doctor Oliver smiled, patting her cheek. “Good girl.” He said and rose to his feet again.
Natalie beamed at him, a small blush coloring her cheeks.
Luke stared at the scene in utter disbelief, wondering if he was dreaming. What was wrong with his sister? She usually never was that friendly with strangers…and Doctor Oliver? Luke never would have thought that the cranky surgeon was actually able to say something…nice.
“So you’re really staying in Oakdale to perform Noah’s surgery?” Lily asked, raising her voice a little so she would have the doctor’s full attention. “That’s really great of you. Thank you, Doctor Oliver.”
Doctor Oliver straightened up and finally looked at Lily while casually slipping his hands in his pockets.
“You don’t have to thank me, Ms Walsh. They offered me to run the new neurology wing they are going to build at Memorial. I didn’t stay here so that Mr. Mayer does have his favorite playground to play on.”
Lily’s smile faded as quickly as it appeared. “So if Luke didn’t convince you to stay here, then what have you and him been…”
“Doctor Oliver.” Luke quickly interrupted. “Didn’t you tell me you have your next appointment in about half an hour or so?”
Luke swallowed nervously when Doctor Oliver turned to look at him, raising an eyebrow. He knew his question was lame but he needed this conversation to end as quickly as possible and he hoped that the doctor would play along.
He didn’t know how much longer he could keep up his composure. In fact he felt close to panicking. Every nerve in his body was screaming. His sore ass was burning like hell and reminded him of what they’ve just done.
He needed to be alone. He wanted them all gone…
“Did I?” Doctor Oliver asked, flashing Luke an innocent smile.
Bastard! Luke couldn’t believe that Doctor Oliver actually refused to help him out. He even seemed to enjoy this odd situation. Luke’s features darkened and he was so close to just physically throwing him out, when his thoughts got interrupted by the sweet voice of his little sister.
“Can I ask you a question, Doctor Oliver?” Natalie asked shyly, her small hand tugging on Doctor Oliver’s sleeve to get his attention. "Why is your cheek purple? Did you get yourself hurt?”
As if Lily was suddenly being pulled out of her own world she noticed it too and her eyes grew wide.
“Oh my God! Doctor Oliver. What happened to your face?" In her mother mode she immediately invaded his personal space, touching his chin. "Do you want me to get you some ice? Does it hurt?"
"No, no. Save it." Doctor Oliver said irritated, taking a few steps back. "It's fine, really. Besides,” he started, now looking directly at Luke. “Your son here has already taken good care of me."
Luke wished the ground would swallow him whole when everybody started to look at him. Of course his mother wouldn’t get the innuendo but the doctor’s smug smile made Luke want to kill him on the spot.
"You're sure you don’t need anything?" Lily had turned her attention to Doctor Oliver again, still sounding not very convinced.
"Really sure."
"What happened?" She asked, unable to hide her curiosity.
Doctor Oliver sighed, rolling his eyes. "Cleary that's none of your business, Ms Walsh."
"Oh but I think it is, Doctor Oliver. Luke is my son and if he was involved in this..."
"I think Doctor Oliver has to go now, Mum." Luke tried again, his voice sounding desperate now.
“Honey, let me talk to Doctor Oliver here. I’m..” But Lily stopped mid-sentence when she noticed Luke trembling slightly. "Luke, are…are you okay? You look…exhausted."
"He's sweating, Mum." Natalie added.
"Oh my god, Baby do you have a fever?"
"No, no…I'm fine, Mum."
"You don't look fine. Doctor Oliver, could you check him out?"
"I said I'm FINE! Stop being always so concerned about me!"
"You only have one kidney left for Christ's sake. I have every right to be concerned!"
"Ms Walsh, I think your son is old enough to take care of himself. He’s not twelve anymore.”
Lily turned to Doctor Oliver again, her look suddenly stone cold. "And I THINK it is time for you to leave now, Doctor Oliver. You know where the door is?"
Doctor Oliver opened his mouth as if he wanted to protest then closed it again, seeing the dangerous look in Lily’s eyes.
"I'll manage." He finally said. Turning towards the door he was just about to leave, when Natalie suddenly grabbed his hand.
“I don’t want Doctor Oliver to leave, mum. Let him stay.” She said stubbornly, looking at her mum with pouty lips.
“It’s okay kiddo.” Doctor Oliver said, giving her a reassuring smile. “Like your brother just said, I have an appointment I need to attend to.”
He gave her a light pad on her shoulder then nodded at Lily before making his way across the room. Without one glance back he was out the door. Luke couldn’t believe he hadn’t looked back at him once.
"Natalie, go to your room. I want to speak to your brother alone." Lily’s still pissed off voice left no room for protest and Natalie quickly obeyed.
Luke knew there was no chance to escape this conversation though he was not sure he could handle it. He felt his mother’s eyes on him as he sat down on the couch, burying his hands in his head. Silence was filling the room. Neither of them spoke. After what seemed like a small eternity, Lily sat down beside him.
"Sweetie, I'm sorry if I embarrassed you in front of Doctor Oliver but I was just concerned about you. Sorry baby, I had a really bad day, today. Holden was…” But Lily immediately fell silent when she noticed Luke’s shoulders shaking from his long, hard sobs.“Luke?”
Luke couldn't take it anymore. Heavy tears started to flood down his face. He had tried so hard...so hard all day not to cry but he couldn’t hold them in anymore.
"Honey, no. Please don't cry. I’m sorry, was it so bad for you? Please stop crying."
"It's not that..." Luke managed between sobs.
“Then what is it, baby?” Lily asked, her face full of concern.
"It's...it’s Noah."
"Noah? What happened, Sweetie? Is something wrong with his health? Did Doctor Oliver tell you some bad news? Please talk to me, honey!"
"We broke up, mum."
"What?"
"I broke up with Noah today.”
