Tonight's Episode housezing April 7 2009, 03:14:47 UTC
Hey Sassy! Thanks for the email. I am currently avoiding Fox Forum, I don't think I can handle what I can only imagine is going on over there right now.

I wish I could stop focusing on the promo and, rather, place all of my thoughts on the episode, but I can't. I really am hoping that the promo was a bit of a misdirection, something DS and Co. have become infamous for. My heart and viewing eyes really can't take a return of the Cameron crush on House to the forefront of the show. I thought DS summed it up best when asked about House/Cam, he said, "Been there, done that." I would really hope that we don't have to go through this all over again. I just need to keep telling myself, "I can put my trust in DS, I can put my trust in DS." I can, right?

Ok back to the episode, I thought it was depressing from the first scene to the closing scene - the lighting in this episode ensured that this episode would lack any happiness.

I thought that Cuddy's reaction to House and his situation was perfect. Despite his outward aversion to comfort, it is something that he desperately needs at a time like this. Yet she didn't provide too much, just enough to let him know that people are there for him, that people care for him. I liked her line that went something like this, "I'm sorry that you feel this isn't your loss."

I thought the reactions of Foreman, 13 and Taub were incredibly realistic. I certainly felt for Taub, who had obviously been in Kutner's position before. I think he was definitely feeling more than just a twinge of guilt. And I didn't find myself annoyed that there was a lot of focus on these three, as they spent more time with Kutner than anyone.

I am very confused regarding Wilson's reaction to House - to avoid him. I thought House's reaction to Kutner's suicide was very human and I didn't see anything 'unhuman' about the way he acted. I agree with you Sassy. I almost was a little upset with Wilson when he said that House was only there to solve the puzzle. It's just, in my opinion at least, how he chooses to cope with this death. I think, honestly, House was scared to death that he might have the one responsible for Kutner's actions. Much like he thought he was with Amber's death. And it would have given him yet another reason how he just causes people pain and would continue to push people even further out of his life. Given that, I really hope this was an eye-opening event for House. I really hope it makes him look at the gaping holes in his life. I know, House is House, but I would like to see him try to let people in.

Ok, I think that is all. I really hope next episode is better than the preview showed. But am I braced for the worst.

Hey Housezing, thanks for coming over! (I hope it's okay if I "friend" you!) I thought you might intentionally be avoiding the forum. :-)

You know I, too, am really upset about the promo and am hoping it was, indeed, a misdirection! Maybe tonight's episode was all a dream and in the next episode, Cameron reveals that she's still in love with House, House rejects her, and she commits suicide. Honestly, that's what I thought would happen when I learned of the spoilers.

Thank you for reminding me that Shore said that. That gives me hope.

>>- the lighting in this episode ensured that this episode would lack any happiness.<<

Do you think that the lighting (darkish blue) might suggest it's in House's head? In a way, it seems similar to "No Reason" in that the people in it reflected how House views them, as well as functioning as aspects of himself. I'm toying with the idea, given to me by a friend via e-mail...

I liked that, too! In fact, I thought Cuddy was terrific in this episode - but I said that above. And I love how deeply they care about each other (though I don't want a longterm romance - but you forgive me for that, right?).

This makes me wonder again (as does the mysterious lack of Wilson near the beginning) if this episode isn't really as it seems - and supposedly Ausiello, who said what we would see tonight would only be *part* of the story, is going to post more about it in a few hours - but I doubt he'll give away anything major. Still, I'm very curious...

Amen to all of the above! :-)

I'm going to jump in here. I'm not expert, but I work with and around lighting designers a lot, so lighting is something I have lots of thoughts about. I don't think it was meant to suggest this is a hallucination or a vision of House's at all. It's incredibly symbolic of what's happening, though. The color and the clarity were two elements of the lighting that really jumped out at me. It was very muted, the color. The bright, saturated colors that we usually see were not there tonight, and I think that was meant to evoke a subconcious emotional reaction in the viewer. It would immediately dampen a mood, give the viewer a sense of gloominess. That this isn't 'happy'. Also, that these characters are living in a dark place right now. It's just as gloomy and gray for them too.

There was also a lot of haze in the air. Literal haze. You can tell it wasn't just a filter because you can see the beams of light everwhere. Through windows. In hospital hallways. All over the place. And when haze is used like that it's always an atmospheric thing--to create a sense of uncertainty and show that the world is literally unclear. And it's used as a symbolic thing. These characters are not thinking very clearly. They are living with a lot of uncertainty now. The circumstances surrounding Kutner's death are and probably will remain unclear and the only thing the characters are left to do is work through the fog and haze and grope for their own conclusions. It's indicative of a struggle. And I thought it was a fantastic creative choice.

I now know it wasn't a dream from reading Ausiello's column. :-) Thank you so much for sharing all your knowledge about lighting. It's really impressive; I will read your post again right before I rewatch so I can pay attention to all the things you've pointed out - things I'd never notice on my own!
