FASHION!

So there's this brilliant scene from The Devil Wears Prada wherein Miranda Preistly explains how trends trickle down from the runways to the retail stores - the speech is peppered with some brilliant bitchery, but the point is the process she explains by which high fashion eventually becomes consumer product.

Here's the clip (spot the actress who's now on Lost!):

Think that was a load of bullshit? Check this. Oscar De La Renta's ready-to-wear line for Spring 2007. Note the strong poppy print that carries through many of the looks. I remember this collection because I went batshit for that poppy print and lamented the fact that I am not rich or fabulous enough to score myself an Oscar dress (nor anywhere to wear one). Two years later, what shows up in Old Navy stores? This poppy-printed cardigan. Now yes, Todd Oldham has taken over as ON's creative director and that is slowly pushing the clothes there in a more fashion forward direction. But this really illustrated the point made in that TDWP scene about how today's couture may be tomorrow's street-level trend. I found that interesting.

Oh, and I totally bought that sweater. It's as close to Oscar as I'll probably ever get.
