lip balm

I am somewhat squee-y today. I mentioned some time ago that i was experimenting in a new little hobby - making my own lip balm. It's going well, albiet slowly. I am still trying to figure out the perfect sweetener, so that they aren't just... pretty smelly waxy stuffs on my lips. So far, the sweetener has been elusive -- but i am very pleased with the consistancy and texture of the batches i've made. Honey doesn't dissolve well and ends up seperating out as it cools; yet it's the one that all of the research i've done keeps recommending. So i've officially wandered into the realm of 'experimenting.' It's tricky though, because whatever i make will likely end up sitting around for a while (really. how fast do YOU go through a tube of lip balm?) and so i don't want to use something that will end up going rancid. I keep working in teeny tiny batches while i perfect my style, which keeps mess ups down to a minimum. And yes, i've messed up a couple of times. *chuckle* One such messup was with my original Peppermint Sage mix; i was melting it down to try and add a touch of sweet to it, and ended up dropping the melted bit into the double boiler, mixing the melted wax with the water and oof. I'll have to redo the peppermint sage - it was really really nice.

Anyhow, this afternoon i dinked around with lables, and i think i came up with something that i really like. At least, for now - whenever i see it i end up with this big dumb grin on my face. What can i say, i like graphic design.

I've got two complete mini-batches, as you can see below. The Cinnamon Vanilla is a bit on the 'strong musky' side, but it's not in that 'omg this stuff sucks' sort of way, but rather something akin to 'ok, so - this is my lipbalm AND my perfume today' sort. The Vanilla Peach is much lighter and (except for the sweetener bit) i am 100% pleased with how it turned out. I plan on mailing out some samples to a few people that expressed interest in the next couple of days. granitedragon, i'll need your current address.

and if you want to see the label design better:

I am taking suggestions for combinations of flavors. Current flavors/scents: Peppermint, spearmint, lavendar, tea tree, sage, vanilla, gingergrass, cinnamon leaf, clove, eucalyptus, peach, honey and balsam peru (it's .. woodsy. nice!).
