When I'm sixty-four

May 27, 2016 10:23

Though I like most of the Beatles' songs, I never liked that one. All year it's ear wormed me maddeningly, and I have to scramble for some music to chase it away. It started early today, on my last day of being sixty-four.

So I'm killing it with one of my favorite Flecha Ensaladas as I reflect down the years ( Read more... )

millstones of mediocrity, 64

The older we get, there are a lot more things to think about, aren't there?

I turned 60 this year, and it was really rough for me. Not because I was any different than the year before, but because people have treated me so differently as I've looked for jobs, and writer's have asked me questions like, "Do you think you don't like it because of your age?"

These things hurt more than getting older.

Oh, yes. The dismissiveness and derision, the sense of "don't you realize you're past it? Everybody else does.' That's a hard battle to fight. I just keep coming back to how glad I am to wake up each morning, and I breathe, I will try to do better.

Even if competence remains a mirage, one thing I have learned (far too late, as usual) is to enjoy the journey.

I think actually improving in skills and abilities and having other people dismiss this achievement because of age is very difficult for me. The only place I feel victories any more is in gaming because they don't know my age and treat me like I'm one of them.

I think you are awesome, both as a person and as a writer, and I want you to know that I appreciate you and your knowledge a lot.

And I can't wait to see what folks share on your birthday post. :D

:-)

They won't know your age when they start reading your books, either!

As I wrote when I went there a few weeks ago, I was struck by the stark, strange beauty of Anacapa Island.

Here's something to listen to that will take up a while, and is of unimpeachable authenticity of interpretation: Shostakovich's Tenth Symphony played four-hands on the piano by the composer and his greatest pupil, Moisei Weinberg. That just impressed my morning.

Would you do me a favor and link tomorrow? I look back all year at the May 28th post, and I might not remember to look at the day before. I wouldn't want to miss these when I come back.

We put "When I'm Sixty-Four" on our wedding soundtrack, right after "My Old Man" and "Wedding Bell Blues," all of which were partly humorous comments on the occasion. Of course it had a little extra humor because I'm actually sixty-six! But I still feel as if sixty-four were impossibly far in the future, too.

Happy birthday! I'm just a year or so behind you and am often sobered by various thoughts.

Here is early spring in the woods:

That is really weird. I can see it when I look at the comment. Let me ponder this.
