So all things being equal, you'd rather be there in person? I feel that way myself, but the issue for me is how much the definition of "all things being equal" has changed.

Exactly. If that burning "Where are the people like me?" question is answered "On Livejournal, Facebook, blogs, ...", then the impulse that gets you past the initial inertia is gone. You may not even know that a convention will be 80% better, since you don't see any reason to go.

I'd rather do some things in person, but my threshold is lower for online things.
