For the first time in too many years I had plenty of time to write and read Yuletide. I wrote 22k of gen and het fic, which I'm pretty sure more than doubles my entire output in both those things.
Forever/Ripper St/Whitechapel
Secrets Revealed (8k)
Henry Morgan was the doctor who examined Mary Kelly's body. But he was more involved in the Jack the Ripper case than is recorded in the files of the case.
I matched on Ripper St and the only other two fandoms that my recipient requested were Forever and Whitechapel, both of which I like, and while i was still tossing RS ideas around and not feeling inspired Jody suggested I write a crossover with them all. Inspired! I mean, you couldn't really find three fandoms MORE suited to being crossed over, because Henry's an immortal who actually was involved in the Ripper investigation.
I thought about going through the mods to check if my recipient likes crossovers, but she seemed super easy to please so I figured as long as long as I included some prompts/ideas from each fandom it'd be okay, especially as her Forever prompt was literally 'I love the Henry/Abe father/son relationship so would love something with those two' and the fic is from Henry's pov and provides this in spades.
I had a lot of fun writing it, super challenging trying to write a threeway plotty gen fic, and at one point I got stalled and had to ditch a whole scene with the RS characters, which was disappointing, but I liked how it turned out. *shrug* My recipient didn't comment on it, so maybe crossover was a bad call, but otoh maybe she had other reasons, I'm don't feel butthurt, and I don't feel bad about writing it because one night while I was completely stalled and wondering if I might not be able to finish it I wrote her another fic from another prompt and she liked that, so.
Forever
Revealed (2k)
Henry should have found a way to tell Jo.
I wrote this one night while stalled on my main fic and wondering if I'd be able to finish it at all, from my recipient's comment 'I can't wait to see how/if they're going to deal with Jo finding out the truth about Henry.' My recipient left a lovely comment, and it's been well received, but that was a fairly safe bet - everyone loves a Big Reveal.
Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries
MFMM is actually my fave fandom at the moment so all the other fics I wrote purely for fun. I've never had Yuletide coincide with a fave rare fandom before, wheeee.
Undercover Revelations (8k)
Phyrne/Jack
Phryne and Jack go undercover at a private club to flush out a blackmailer. Jack's sexual horizons are broadened when he discovers something about himself.
So, this was supposed to be a 1000 words of porn Treat, because two people liked the idea of Phyrne pegging Jack, but it turned out that I needed to bring Jack to a plausible (to me) headspace that he'd be up for that, which unexpectedly resulted in my first ever venture into writing D/s!!!
It seems to have been enthusiastically received by some, yay, but also some people who were like 'well written but hell no' which is valid *g*. This resulted in a fun discussion with a few people in the comments about control issues, and someone writing
a meta post on tumblr *boggles*
Tied Up (1.8k)
Phyrne/Jack
Phryne and Jack get tied up together.
Yeah, this was pretty much a Treat from someone who wanted 'all the cliches!' I did have a interesting discussion wth someone in the comments about who would make the first move, so that was fun :)
The Marrying Kind (2.2k)
Hugh/Dot, Phyrne/Jack
Hugh's reflections on the path his life's taken.
Fluffier than I normally write, because Hugh is super nice, this Treat used prompts of 'found family' and 'future fic' and incorporated smaller elements that the recipient said she liked, such as Jane's love of books. I quite like it, though I'm aware that it would have been a much better fic if I'd had the time to 'show not tell' more of it.
I'm aware that some people's headcanon is that Miss Fisher would never get married, which I can totally see, but I can also see her marrying someone she truly loves, as long as it's on her own terms, so *shrug*
I also have had much more time to read Yuletide this year as I am still on holiday instead of back at work, so when I ran out of fandoms I wanted to read I sorted by kudos and read a heap of fics that had hardrly any kudos. Admittedly I skimmed some, but I also found a few super interesting ones.
