Midnight Madness
By Sarga

Hidden eyes flashed briefly in the darkness as Kagome stumbled along the unfamiliar path. What would it take for that... thing to leave her alone?

Here she was alone in an unknown forest, plagued by some creepy creature who wouldn't appear in plain sight. All because she had been crazy enough to answer the call of magic. Through a portal.

The eyes flashed again and Kagome stomped her foot in frustration.

“Show yourself! I will not be spooked like some doe being hunted!” Kagome instantly bit her lip, wondering if her words were a little to close to reality. Unable to take them back, she stood her ground, albeit more nervously than she had hoped.

“Very well, priestess.”

Sesshoumaru's smooth baritone voice betrayed his position. Kagome wheeled around to face him as the demon Lord stepped into the moonlight.

“It pleases me that you answer my call, priestess. The first step is complete.” Sesshoumaru circled the human girl as she wilfully kept her feet from following him in circles.

Why did she feel so much like prey?

“First step? What are you talking about?” Kagome demanded, her heartbeat accelerating with the unknown. She was far from safety now. If he wished it, she was dead. Quick as that.

Kagome gulped as she tried to wet her dry throat.

“You will know when you must. For now, know that your Lord is pleased.” Sesshoumaru's voice faded into the forest behind Kagome and she felt inexplicably nervous.

“Damned 'holier than thou' bastard...” Kagome muttered as her wide eyes skimmed the forest.

“Now, now, priestess,” Sesshoumaru's voice was at her ear, intimately close this time. “It does not become you to speak such foul words...” The hint of threat, of something thrilling sent a shiver down Kagome's spine...

...and sent Kagome bolt upright in her sleeping bag, her heart hammering in fear, in excitement. In disbelief. Her nervous laughter broke the silence and she quickly heard the dull thump of Inuyasha's bare feet hitting the forest floor.

“Whatsa' matter, wench? You gone batty or somethin'?” Inuaysha's concern was touching, if crude.

“Yeah, Inuyasha, I think I might be.” Kagome lay back down and let the half-demon puzzle out her strange response.

'After all,' thought the priestess as she nestled into her blankets. 'What use would a demon lord have with someone like me?'
