“Angel?” Buffy's voice was soft, hopeful... oblivious.
“Buffy? Can I...” Timid, like the soul's slave he was supposed to be, Angelus cheated his way into the slayer's apartment.
“Yes, come in!”
“I... I had to see you now that I'm...” Angelus could barely hold down the bile. To willingly kowtow to human cattle... but it would all be worth it in the end. “Buffy...” Angelus forced his features to soften, to smile. “My soul is permanent.”
“What?” Buffy narrowed her eyes suspiciously. She was too sharp. Sometimes she could be a real pain.
“Can't you feel it?” Angelus whispered softly, stroking his prey's cheek. Wolf and lamb. “It's here to stay.”
True words, just not the way she expected. Angel's soul was locked tightly within Angelus, courtesy of Wolfram & Hart. Trapped within his body, held at bay by powerful forces, the soul railed but ultimately stayed confined.
Buffy could feel the soul of her forbidden love. Deep within Angelus' eyes, the slayer could see the love and tenderness she had always longed for.
Twisted lies.
It was her undoing.
“Buffy,” Angelus pushed on. “After all these years,” his lips drew within a hair's breadth of the slayer's. “We can finally be together.”
Buffy sighed and let herself succumb to his touch. She felt the wall behind her as Angelus pushed her flat, tonguing the scar where he had drank from her years ago. Lifetimes ago.
Buffy clutched at Angelus' head, tangling fingers with hair until the vampire forced her hands over her head. Eyes closed in passion, the slayer missed the sight of her false lover turning into the true beast that he was.
Fangs tore through flesh.
Together, they drank their fill.
