Day 7 of the
bloody nose dilemma!
We had a follow up vet appointment on Tuesday, which was Day 8 since we first noticed Sid's bloody nose. They made sure we were the last appointment of the day so we wouldn't be infecting any other client, and they had plastic covering everything in the room we were in. The dog room (never been in that one!).
They took swabs for DNA test, which ended up showing nothing but mycoplasma, which the vet said could cause the eye discharge Sid has always had, but not the bloody nose. She is almost certain that the bloody noses are from feline viral rhinotracheitis (FVR or feline herpes). She was at a conference while I was there at the clinic seeing the other vet (who I don't mind so much anymore), and talking to a feline specialist about our cats, and the feline specialist showed her pictures of cases of bloody noses even worse than what Sid had (in some cases, the nose almost completely gone), that was positively diagnosed as herpes. We won't know for sure unless we do a biopsy, which I won't do, so we'll never know for sure what it was - but as long as they're better I don't really care!
We continued with the sub-q fluids, and the antibiotics, got some more antibiotics for Penny, but not the other two (since they are just to keep infection out of the nose). But we got L-Lysine supplement to give to all the affected cats. Whatever the combination seems to be working, Sid and Penny are SO much better now!
On day 10, Sid's facial swelling went down, and today his big scab fell off after a particularly difficult pill incident, but underneath, it now looks so good! Pics under cut.
