Everybody remembers the Alamo...

...but what about the other San Antonio Missions?

Just got back from another San Antonio trip with my family. Looks like this is going to be an annual thing. SA is a nice, close and fairly inexpensive place to get away.

Anyway, this year I wanted to check out the other Spanish Missions. There are five missions in San Antonio: Mission Espada, Mission San Juan, Mission San José, Mission Concepción and, of course, The Alamo (originally Mission San Antonio de Valero). I only had time to visit two this time, so I chose San José and Concepción (as they were the closest to the center of town and that was the direction we were heading).

Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo was originally founded in 1720. It is the largest mission and, thanks to restorations projects, is very close to what it looked like over 250 years ago. The church is actually still in use.

A far shot of the main compound

The main church of San Jose. This is actually the second church built for the Mission.

I'm thinking these were the living quarters.

The water-powered mill behind the main compound. This is a fully functional replication.

Mission Nuestra Señora de la Purisima Concepción de Acuna was established in 1731. Unfortunately, it was under renovation when we visited and I only got an external shot of the church.

You can find more pictures in my gallery.

Next year, I plan on visiting San Juan and San Espada. Hopefully Mission Concepción will be open as well.

Cheers!
