BOOK THREE:
FIRE
CHAPTER FOUR:
SOKKA'S MASTER
Team Avatar had built a little lean-to over Appa, to protect the giant flying bison from the elements tonight, and were all lying on it watching the spectacular meteor shower overhead. Well, three of them were watching the show -- the blind one was kind of grumpy.
"Wow, this is amazing to watch," Katara said in awe.
"Kind of makes you realize how insignificant we are," Sokka agreed. With something like THAT going on, who WOULDN'T wax philosophical?
"Eh, you've seen nothing once, you've seen it 1,000 times," Toph grumbled.
Sokka felt a twinge of guilt -- her sheer awesomeness kept blinding him to the fact that she was, well, blind. But the next meteor to appear was a doozy, and BOY, did he feel sorry that she couldn't see it. "Oh, man," he told her. "You've never not seen anything like THIS."
Of course, then the meteor had to go and ruin things by crashing into a mountain and setting the forest on fire. The team scrambled, and moments later they were on Appa's back flying to check it out.
"The fire is gonna destroy that town!" Katara shouted, pointing to a large village not too far off from the flaming crater.
"Not if we can stop it!" Aang declared, as he got Appa to fly faster. It was ON.
Aang, Toph, and Sokka jumped down near the flaming crater while Katara took the reins. "There's a creek over here," she told them. "I'll bend the water onto the fire!"
Aang, in the meantime, wanted to practice his Earthbending. "Toph, let's make a trench to keep the fire from coming any closer!"
Sokka looked around -- there was nothing to be sliced and/or diced, the plans were already in place, and really, anything he tried to do would just get in the way. He started to run to go warn the villagers -- but the fire seemed to be in hand, and there wasn't any need to go scare people just yet. "I'll stay out of the way and watch after Momo!" he announced. It wasn't glorious -- in fact, it was downright disappointing -- but those were the breaks.
He and the lemur stood back stamped out any embers that floated their way while the benders did their stuff, and soon the fire was out.
The next day, they ate lunch in the town they had just saved, and Katara picked at her food distractedly.
"What's the matter?" Sokka asked her. "You've barely touched your smoked sea slug!" Not that he was going to swipe it if she wasn't hungry. At all. Well, maybe a little bit.
She frowned at him. "It's just that... Are you sure you didn't feel left out last night? I mean, we made you lemur-sit!"
Sokka shrugged. "I'm not going to lie, I'm jealous of all the awesome bending stuff you guys can do, like putting out forest fires, and flying around, and making other stuff fly around. I wish I could, but I can't fly around, so I've just got to be the best me that I can. I fight, and I plan, and I keep our spirits up, and I'll leave the magic powers to you guys." He smiled at her. "Besides, I can still kick the butt of your average Fire Nation soldier, and trust me, that's a nice change from Fandom."
