Ahhh! Shoulder pads!!!!

(I don't normally shop there, because I find their fashions hideous and poorly-made, but they do occasionally sell good cheap T-shirts. And it's nearly impossible to screw up a classic T-shirt.)
Anyway, let's for a moment suppose that in one possible universe the Dress Barn is a fashion barometer for somebody somewhere. That would mean that for the fall, heavily-brocaded, sequined, and shoulder-padded suits in colors like teal, pink, and grey will be in. *shudder*
Frightened, I forgot about the T-shirts and wandered over to the jewelry display to find some small, simple hoop earings. No. Huge, chunky, and bangly was the norm. I backed out of the shop v. slowly.
Tell me, has the conservative '80s material girl look cycled back in? Because no one notified ME about this.
It didn't help that Cindi Lauper was being piped in over the store sound system. It was almost like they were trying to validate the clothing they were selling. Now, I love Cindi as much as the next kid who had to lip-synch "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" at her Girl Scout recital, but the whole effect was a bit much.
I did see a pair of black leggings with chinese characters and little dragons on them that would have been perfect for karate battles with iresprite. However, I ultimately decided it would be cheaper and easier to get my karate ass kicked in regular trousers.

In other news, my sister-in-law dropped the gauntlet today and asked me to train with her for the Tufts 10k. I have been such a slug this summer, haven't run in 2 weeks, but she guilted me into it. Last summer I was running 45-50 miles per week to get ready for the marathon. Of course, this made me a not-fun person to be around, but I was v. fit. This summer I have been too laid-back about training. But at least I have my sense of humor back.

In other other news, I re-read Susan Cooper's "Over Sea, Under Stone" yesterday for the first time in years. Discovered that Jane and Simon Drew are highly annoying characters. Especially Jane: whines & cries too much, nearly screws everything up multiple times, is generally a fraidy cat. Barney is okay, though.
