I've never really had any pets as an adult, and I'm not sure that a fish even qualifies, but it wasn't really mine anyways, it was my son's. Supposedly low maintanence, and it was, for the most part. I noticed once about six or nine months ago that she didn't look very good in tap water...so I had been changing her water with bottled water. Well

You could always replace the fish without telling him...
