Today was a good fun day. I need to have more of those.
I went to go see Tomorrow, When the War Began. Because I'm a huge fan of the books, I was really excited and also scared about how it would be. And seeing it, I had reason for both. There were parts of it that were fantastic (like the action sequences) and parts of it that were terrible (like some of the characters). It was still worth seeing, had a good sense of humour in places and I got to the end wishing it would keep going for longer, but there were parts that really made me cringe.
'Ellie' managed to be one of the better rounded out characters of the movie, but she still didn't feel like the Ellie from the book to me. And at the beginning I felt like they tried to make her too pretty.
Corrie was okay. I loved her hair. There was a believable friendship between her and Ellie.
Kevin, I was pretty meh about.
Chris, oh dear god, that was terrible. To me, he's supposed to be a depressed, can't quite get himself together guy who turns to drugs/alcohol because he can't deal. In the movie, he's some crazy, whacky stoner. Way to turn a well-developed realistic character into a ridiculous stereotype just for laughs.
Fi, I still loved, though they played up her upper class towniness too much.
Lee got on my nerves. He had a few good moments, but I couldn't wipe from my mind some truly awful dialogue that really didn't work. And he felt really bland during a 'discuss my relationship with Ellie' moment.
Robyn. I think I read the actress is so much younger than the others, and it really shows. She looked far too young to be hanging around them. And she felt too meek to me for most of it. But that moment of awesome she has at the bridge? Very well played.
Homer I loved. He felt like Homer to me.
I think they overplayed the relationships. With the exception of Corrie and Kevin I felt like they should have been subtler.
And there's some truly terrible dialogue. I could recognise some of it from the book as Ellie's musings to herself about everything. But it didn't work spoken aloud. Especially in the scene where they're decided if they want to fight back. Far too much of what was coming out of their mouths seemed speechy and awkward, it didn't feel natural at all.
I still really enjoyed it though and didn't want it to end. I think it was my love of the book's that kept me going through a bit of it, but it's been a long time since I've gotten to the end of the movie and not wanted it to be over. I do hope they make another one and I hope that gives them a chance to improve on things.
And anyone who hasn't read the books before, really should. They are fantastic. I would not hesitate to say John Marsden is in my top 3 authors, if not at no. 1. And the rest of his books are fantastic too, but the Tomorrow series is the best.
