Well here I am in the dungeon of Scripps, aka the back lab in the basement of Scripps. There hasn't been a single person here since I got here. There are only like 3 people in the front lab, so I'm not expecting that I will be getting anyone in the back lab tonight. I am supposed to be reading for magazine writing tomorrow, but I am taking a break from that to update the old journal.
Let's see, the weekend was good. Friday night was the benefit concert for Relay for Life. It was so much fun and we made about $300 - excellent! Everyone in all three of the bands was so nice... everyone came up and introduced/talked to me before the show. I love Chris Graham... he is so adorable and a great musician. I can really see him making it big someday soon. The raffle was a success as well. I won two of the prizes, a $10 giftcard to Brennan's and a free ice cream at Coldstone. I am super excited about the free ice cream - you all know how crazy I am about ice cream. I have never been to Brennan's in my four years here but I guess this gives me an excuse to go. Saturday we had a dinner party at our apartment. We made ham, augratin potatoes, green beans, rolls and this excellent chocolate fudge cake. Everything turned out real well and it was a fun time. After that, Kelly, Matt and I went over to Matt's house where we watched her play Star Wars on the computer. Sunday was religious education and I had to teach by myself because Mary was out of town. There were only three kids in class so it wasn't too bad.
Classes are going pretty good as well. We finished up Taming of the Shrew in my English class and had a test on it last week. My English teacher is kind of psycho though. She is kind of obsessed with her cats. One of the questions on our exam was "what is the names of my cats?" Another question was, "What NFL football player do I think is hot?" answer - Dante Culpepper. Really what do either of those things have to do with Shakespeare? We have now started reading Much Ado about Nothing. I really like this play, I think I have read it before in my comparitive arts class and I know I have seen the movie. The movie version with Emma Thompson is really good and I think I might rent it this weekend.
Magazine Feature Writing is going ok too. I came up with my story ideas and magazine analysis for last week and now I have to start working on my first article. I think I will put that on the to-do list for tomorrow.
Sign Language is ok. I don't really like the teacher, she is a grad student who doesn't explain things very well and isn't very sure about herself and what she is teaching. However I am learning some signs and slowly starting to get the hang of it. Hopefully it will get better in the coming weeks.
Tennis is really fun. I have definitely gotten better at tennis over the past three weeks, just need to work on the backhand and I'll be all set. Although not good enough to play against the really good cute guy who often plays tennis with no shirt on. lol. At least that gives me something to strive for.
Dance is great too. We had a crazy guest teacher last week. His name is Sean Curran and he was one of the original members of Stomp. He now has his own company. He was really funny and his class was great.
Besides classes, life is moving right along. I applied for those two public service assistant jobs in children's that I mentioned in an earlier entry. I am constantly on the look-out for more jobs to apply for. I re-did my resume and I am really liking the look of it now.
There was an interested passage in one of the articles I read for magazine feature writing that kind of described me. The article was about a man who went from being poor and working in the fields to educating himself and becoming successful as a librarian and researcher. Here is the passage:
"He liked library work, and thought it was good for him. There was peace there, in that temple-like place, handling the precious books, indexing the valuable knowledge so that it could be found by other hungry minds. The library freed his mind for thought."
I really liked that paragraph. I think it defines a lot of people who enjoy working in libraries. A lot of times people question me when I say I want to work in a libary because they just don't get the attraction of the job. But when I read a passage like that, describing someone who really cares about the library as much as I do, it makes me realize that I am striving towards the correct career goal.
On another note, Formal is coming up this weekend on Saturday. Finally, all of the crazy planning and organizing that I have done over the past several months will culminate in this event. I think everything will turn out well. I'm not really looking forward to Formal though. Actually, if I wasn't in charge of it, I'm not so sure that I would even be going. It seems like practically everyone has a date - especially all of the people that I would want to hang out with. I feel like I am going to be a third wheel with everyone.
I have been doing a lot of reading lately but still can't keep up with the pile of library books sitting next to my desk. I just started reading Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America by Barbara Ehrenreich. This is a really interesting book about people working low wage jobs and trying to make ends meet. Barbara adapted the lifestyle of these people to give a first person account of the situation. My sister has been trying to get me to read this one since she read it in high school but I have always put it off. However, the author is coming to speak at OU in the beginning of May so I decided now is the time to read the book and I am really looking forward to seeing her talk.
The Cleveland Indians started the season a couple of weeks ago and are off to a somewhat rocky start. I was expecting them to be a little better right off, but it is still early. I am expecting big things from them this year. The good thing about them losing (if there is in fact a good thing) is that Adam said he would pay me $1 for Relay for Life for each Indians loss over the first 2 weeks. My parents were at the game on Saturday and my dad sent me pictures of the Jake and the new Build-a-Slider shop. I am super excited about the build a slider shop and totally think I am going to make one when I get to a game. I can't wait to be back in Cleveland so I can go to a game!
I think that's all for now.
