Ruby sang a solo at her spring concert last night. Right before the concert started, one of the teachers warned me that she and another teacher cried at dress rehearsal. "Is it that bad?" I thought--I didn't say that, she might have taken my hilarious use of inappropriate sarcasm the wrong way.
"Did you cry?" she asked afterward
"No, I was too nervous." In fact, I was too nervous to even listen to her song. The great thing about videotaping kids performances, for me, is that it gives me a way to stay calm; just focus on the camera.
The concert was about kids moving up to middle school and the problems they face when they get there. Ruby's song was called "Why Can't Things Stay the Same." There was supposed to be a scene where Ruby gets bullied, but they cut it a week ago--too edgy, I guess. There was also supposed to be a scene about smoking (to not to =)) but they changed it to skipping school (also to not to--side story, when I asked then 3 year old Nigel 'what did I tell you about hitting your brother?' he answered, 'to not to' and I've used it ever since.)
