Book rec: THE SPHINX PROJECT by Kate Hawkings

One of my favorite genres is Young Adult fiction. I read all kinds from JK Rowling to Kristin Cashore to Suzanne Collins. Why? Because its FUN, and the kid in me wishes they'd had adventures like that years ago.

I came across THE SPHINX PROJECT a few months back as a cover posted on Goodreads. That alone would have drawn me, but then I read the blurb:

Not many people can say their entire existence has been one big lab experiment: poked and prodded by scientists, genetically modified to be the best and endure the worst, subjected to daily tests and trials that would kill a normal human. All Michaela wants is her own life, to be able to go to school, flirt with boys, maybe eat ice cream now and then. So when the chance to escape finally comes, Michaela and her sister grab it, taking their friends with them.

But they weren't the only ones to find their way out of those labs. Following close behind are another breed of creature, one that doesn't know the difference between right and wrong, who exist only to feed their own hunger. The appearance of a strange boy who seems too much like them to be a coincidence makes things even more confusing. But as the world begins to literally fall apart around them, Michaela must accept his help, especially when she could lose the very thing she holds dearest: her sister.

I LOVED IT!!! It hit all my buttons: post-apocalyptic, lots of action, burgeoning romance between characters, more action, biopunk/genetic modification themes, monsters, ACTION... I didn't even mind the (really cool!) cliffhanger at the end.

Doesn't hurt that the author is really nifty and down to earth. ;) It was also edited by another YA author I love, Rhonda Stapleton, which only makes it better. If you want to read TSP its currently available as an ebook on Amazon (US or UK). I don't think it's on Barnes and Noble yet but will be soon.

*~*

Yesterday I managed 1,546 words on Alpha (which may finally have a name but will continue it's current nomenclature on the blogosphere) bringing me to 3,546. I've decided that for now I'm going to focus on this story for the majority of my writing time; I'm already smitten with the hero (as he is in my head) so unless he turns into a total doucher or I write myself into a corner, I think I'll be fine. :) Feels nice to be writing interesting characters again - short stories don't let you cram in a lot of characterization). I will however look forward to getting past the beginning to the real fun of the story. ;)

Ah well. Back to the daily grind at work. Works-in-progress sadly do not pay the bills (yet!).
