In the Swedish translation, Dragon's sore mo ii (if that's the same as "That works" on the first page) is translated as "Varför inte?" =Why not?. His answer to Smoker is rendered as pretty much, "Why would I stop another man from raising his sail?

Never mind that the intent was to hit Ritchie. I guess Usopp isn't quite a master sharpshooter yet.)

Yeah, I wondered about that moment in re-reads, since before that I don't recall Usopp being shown as missing with his shots. But I think up until now he had luck with the weather, i.e. it wasn't very windy in his earlier shooting scenes - and here in Loguetown, it was. Later on he would learn how to adjust for windy weather much better.

Right after that as they must make the entrance to Reverse Mountain Luffy trusts someone else with his hat for the second time shown in the manga - this time, Zoro. (There seems to be popular fanon that only Nami is trusted with the hat, but that's not so.)

I much agree on Mr 9 and Miss Monday! [Spoiler for a cover pic during the Fishman Island arc]Which was why I was very happy to see them not just alive and... )

[Zoro's role]
I agree, I don't think Zoro is cut out to be captain. He's strong enough, and he can be a brilliant strategist in battle situations, but captain, no.

I also wonder a lot about his alleged role as "first mate." Like everyone else, I originally assumed he was and is the first mate, but reading fan discussion that pointed out that Oda never calls him this made a big impression on me. We see other characters explicitly called fukusenchou, so I have to believe that it's significant that Zoro is never called by that title

[re: Zoro]
Hmm, that's a good point that Zoro has never been called "first mate," (though they never make a point of saying this, unlike the explicitly stated "Usopp isn't our shipwright." I noticed that during the Luffy vs. Usopp battle in Water 7 that Zoro said some very first-mate-sounding things to Luffy.

I would love to see Jinbei join the crew, but I'm not sure how I feel about him (or anyone else just joining) becoming first mate.

Huh! That's an interesting thought, to be sure, and one I can't recall having seen before. Good points, but I must admit my first reaction is a knee-jerk emotional one that it would be way unfair to Zoro. (Even though I like Jimbei a lot and there are times when Zoro grates on me, esp. post-timeskip Zoro.) I guess I'm quite fine with the Strawhats not having an official first mate, but if they did get one, I'd prefer it to be someone who's been there from practically the start and knows Luffy extremely well. But it's certainly true that they could use the political savvy...

Still, I could well see Jimbei's joining leading to the question of a first mate actually being raised within the crew for the first time, especially if an outsider assumes that it's now Jimbei. Whether that would lead to an official position for any of them is another question... But if not, at least we'd get an explanation why Luffy hasn't appointed one yet.

I've always found it interesting how much of the lighthouse bit seemed like innocuous exposition at the time, but has ended up being really important down the line. At the time, the only thing that stuck out as really important was Crocus' last line about Roger. After learning what we know now though - wow, there's an absolute ton of really relevant information given here to the central plot. And of course, the rest of Laboon's story (sob).

It's funny, Whiskey Peak has some of my favorite moments in the series, but as a whole, it's probably my least favorite mini-arc in the whole series. Zoro fighting off the entire town is pretty hilarious though. (More on why I don't like it in the next volume)

Yes! Thank god Funimation rescued One Piece from the horror that was 4Kids.

BTW, not that this comment needed spoiler protection, but did you ever figure out why you were having trouble with spoiler protection in your earlier comments? As far as I know, this code should work in the comments as well as in the main post:

[lj-spoiler text="Arc name"]Some stuff[/lj-spoiler]

(Replace [] with pointy brackets)

Just in cast you want to have fun with spoilery speculation in comments in the future.

How is 601 a significant number? Not the events, which I'm sure are huge, but 100 is a clear milestone. 601 is like 101 chapters past a cool milestone and/or 399 chapters away from the next.

Gah, am I ever going to find Buggy and crew amusing?

Smoker's devil fruit power

…does what, exactly? Creates a smokescreen?

Mohji and Ritchie are having trouble setting the Merry on fire because of the downpour.

For some reason, this made me laugh. Mohji isn't exactly innovative, is he? (Sink it? Dismantle it?)

Zoro and Tashigi squabbling after Zoro defeats her is kind of equal parts adorable, hilarious and heartbreaking.

Adorable and hilarious, definitely. Heartbreaking??

An officer reports that Buggy and co also escaped due to the storm.

I do not approve.

Buggy and Alvida decide to follow Luffy to the Grand Line, too.I continue to disapprove ( ... )

I am going to have to split this up into lots of comments! sara_tanaquil July 15 2012, 23:20:18 UTC
Chapters 1-600 are (spoiler). 601 is the beginning of (spoiler) -- if I tell you it's in Volume 61, does that ring a bell?

[Spoiler-protected, just to be safe]I am not sure whether to laugh or cry at the idea that this series might end up being exactly 1200 chapters and 120 volumes long. Oda is very capable of being just that crazy. On the other hand, he didn't originally estimate that the series would run this long. He's had the entire story line in his head from the beginning, but I guess he discovered that the actual exposition of it expanded to be larger than he planned.

Gah, am I ever going to find Buggy and crew amusing?Heh, now I'm trying to remember when he really started to grow on me. Watching the anime helps, I think, because his Japanese voice actor is so hilarious ( ... )

I know what happens then (at least, i think I do…avoiding all spoiler cuts), but I don't see how six-oh-one is a special number. Y'know, like how we celebrated the new millennium on 1/1/2000 instead of 1/1/2001, 'cause 2000 is a flashier number. So I guess I see it as ending the previous arc on the more special number. Mostly, though, 600 feels less significant than 100 or 500 or 1000. But I do get that 600/601 is more special than 589 or 623. So I'm not missing your point entirely, I promise.

It's true, we only get a glimpse of his power here. Smoker has the power to turn his entire body into smoke, and to form any part of that smoke into a weapon and manipulate it independently. Basically, he can transform into an element and remain in complete control over that element.

But how is smoke a weapon…other than making your eyes sting and lungs hurt?

I wonder if the milestone was originally supposed to be 500, but the plot got away from him? (I mean, he originally thought the story would be done in about five years! The manga is hitting its fifteenth anniversary in five days.)

Some of the symbolism-math is undoubtedly fan craziness. Sometime, when -- I hope! -- you're past the point of being able to be spoiled, go back and read the conversation that day-of-the-month and I had about which crew member is which number in sequence. I seriously need a "My fandom has OCD" icon. The Japanese page she referenced was one of the craziest things I have ever seen. I've read Kennedy assassination conspiracy theories that were simpler.

how is smoke a weaponBecause, I believe, he can make the smoke harden into a form dense enough to be a weapon. I need to look back at the panels to check, but I think he can use it like a tentacle to imprison or choke someone with, or like a fist to strike someone ( ... )
