Poll: Ripping Netflix

Jun 03, 2010 07:43

I was talking to someone recently who is a member of Netflix and has been for as long as Netflix has been around. What said person *does* with the DVDs from Netflix is to rip them onto the computer, thereby using Netflix essentially like The Pirate Bay (only, you know, without the viruses but with some assembly required ( Read more... )

Netflix is the devil spawn. I wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole.

Oh, really?! Why do you say that? If you're interested in the service, but hate the company, I'm pretty sure Blockbuster has a similar sort of service.

I'm not considering getting it--I don't have time to watch everything I DVR--I was just struck by said person's certainty and sense of justification in what seems to (naive and hopeless) me to be pirating movies and TV shows.

I love Netflix. I'm really interested in Ande's take on it, too. I tried the Blockbuster version for a while, but they never sent anything in the right order. If I was watching a series, they sent discs randomly, one from season 2 one from 5 and one from 6, even if the right ones were available. I quit it after about 3 weeks.

Somehow the ripping thing doesn't seem like that big a deal to me, but I certainly respect people who don't want to. I don't download stuff for free online, music or movies, but given how expensive Netflix is, I kind of feel like I've paid for it.

My folks are crazy about Netflix. They get all sorts of interesting documentaries and learn neat things. When they were here we watched one on the writing and editing of the Hebrew Bible and another on the Gospel of Judas. Cool stuff.

I thought Netflix was pretty cheap--like $10 a month for as many movies as you can cycle through in that time or something like that. Obviously, I don't really know how it works though.

Netflix has a lot of plans, and I think the $10 is the cheapest. It's one or two at a time, as fast as you can cycle them. But I'm home alone all day and need input, so we have the 6 at a time for, I think, $48. And even then I often don't have any.:)

I can see that. Netflix cycles fast, but I'm not surprised they can't keep up.

P.S. I loves your hover-kitties icon. :D

Okay, here's my deal on Netflix. I hate them with a burning passion because of their marketing strategy. They have pop-ups all over the internet and are totally annoying. I will never subscribe as long as they do this. Yes, there is probably something I can do to kill the pop-up but, the point is, I shouldn't have to.

I'd never use a Blockbuster program either. Blockbuster lost me years ago when they refused to stock The Last Temptation of Christ in their stores. I've never seen the film, I'm not a fan or anything, but it's not their call to dictate what is available to me to watch. Frankly if that film is too radical for them I doubt they'd stock much else that interests me.

The only media I download are things I can't get any other way. So if no US network is smart enough to pick up Callum's new show I will download it without guilt until the dvds come out. *g* I also pick up a lot of used dvds on ebay, esp some of my more obscure stuff.

I can see that. I've got some no-advertising thing on my browser so I almost never get popups but I can see that it would be annoying as all kinds of hell.

And I totally agree about movie stores having to carry most everything--I feel that way about bookstores too. I feel it very strongly.

I hope that some network is smart enough to pick up Callum's new show--what kind of show is it?? :D

I haven't done much with used DVD's--I should explore that more. :D

Callum plays a cop with Multiple Personality Disorder and uses the different personalities to solve crimes. Role made in heaven, right? It's been surmised that Hugh says: "You're like good cop and bad cop all rolled into one." Hee!

There are some hot like burning publicity stills here:
