Poll: Ripping Netflix

Jun 03, 2010 07:43

I was talking to someone recently who is a member of Netflix and has been for as long as Netflix has been around. What said person *does* with the DVDs from Netflix is to rip them onto the computer, thereby using Netflix essentially like The Pirate Bay (only, you know, without the viruses but with some assembly required).

So natural is this behavior to said person that said person assumes that everyone who gets Netflix uses it this way. In fact, said person believes that Netflix must be aware that everyone is doing this and be okay with it. Said person is *quite* positive about the near ubiquity of this behavior.

I am, frankly, appalled. My parents get Netflix and I can guarantee you that they would never do that. I don't get Netflix, but if I did, I can guarantee you that I would never do that. Said person thinks that I and my folks are hopelessly naive and Behind The Times. Possibly a bit stupid. Definitely not getting the most out of the service.

It occurred to me that said person might actually be correct about the behavior being common and at least tacitly acceptable so I figured a poll would be a good way to find out what other people think on this issue. It'd be nice to know whether or not I am hopelessly naive. Not that my behavior is going to change, mind: I still wouldn't do that even if it turns out I am hopeless. But I'm curious.

If you'd like to answer the poll, please do so even if you don't get Netflix--you can just say whether you *would* or not. I'm vaguely aware that there are other outfits that work the same way as Netflix out there, so if you get one of those, extrapolate.
