So there was this very poor man and one day he found a cup. Somehow he figured out that if tears fell into this cup, they would turn into pearls. Now this man was very poor, but he was also a very happy person, and to make tears fall into the cup, he would have to cry.
He began to become very depressed but also very greedy, and the sadder he got, the more he became wealthy from his tears. He would do things like be nasty to other people and hurt others as well as himself. Since he had been a relatively good person, naturally these things made him cry. The story ends with the man sitting on top of a mountain of pearls with the magic cup in one arm, and his wife's slain body lying in the other. And for some reason, even with all these pearls and wealth, he wasn't a happy man anymore.
