Top 2008 Anime

Dec 31, 2008 22:05

It’s already 2009 so now a short wrap-up on the anime series that aired last year (so excluding movies or continuations from last year or one-episode shows) xD The list was originally super long actually (I have listed more than a hundred shows x_x) so I no longer included that I didn’t watch or gave me too much headaches ^^; It’s also supposed to be a ranking but I had a hard time deciding which I like better than the other so I just arranged them in alphabetical order by category xD Hehe.
TOP FAVORITES
Show that I find cool and marvelous but at the same time addicting and lovable xD

Amatsuki

It took me a while to adjust to the anime art, but overall it had been just as good as the manga ^_^ A mix of supernatural + technology + history is not common, and this one was a good combination ^_^ Characters had also been impressive. Story was good, but it’s obviously not over. It needs a sequel badly ^^; SO many things unexplained yet ^^;

Bounen no Xamdou

I consider this another Bones masterpiece! It’s so shounen, yes, but not your typical one. Action scenes had been awesome, characters were fantastic in their own way, story’s good, overall it’s really amazing! ^_^

Casshern SINS

It’s very very depressing yet it’s also very beautiful *_* It’s kinda episodic but in each of those, Casshern gets to meet an interesting character. In other words, the fillers weren’t useless. Action scenes were superb and background art was wow. One of the coolest cyborg series so far xD

Code Geass R2

This series is such a trainwreck but managed to make some awesomely shocking episodes and epic ending. It also had lots of unnecessary fanservice but the entertainment Code Geass brings is still damn addicting. *_*

Gundam 00 Season 2

It is much much better than the previous season in many ways. If only there’s less Saji and Louise, it would have been more fun to watch honestly ^^;

Himitsu Top Secret ~The Revelation~

Manga art was prettier but anime adaptation had been as impressive as the manga. It’s not your typical psychological thriller, because it has the technology wherein one can see a dead person’s memories for solving crimes. It was mind-blogging, had great plot twists, interesting characters, and overall terrific!

Natsume Yuujinchou

I’ve read the manga and the anime was much much better. And it continues to be better than I expect it to be. Premise may seem dull, and yes, it’s episodic, but every episode was good and had lovable characters. Nyaanko-sensei was great entertainment too! xD Haha! I consider this as the best of Brains Base next to Baccano ^_^

Nodame Cantabile Paris Hen

Season 1 was much better but it still has the nodame magic xD There had been progress on the romance and characters have grown (in skills) and matured. And of course, it’s still so entertaining even if I already know what’s gonna happen xD

Switch

Police force that specializes in crimes that involve drugs. It had been very cool and interesting. It should have been a long series, not just a short one-case OVA xD

Tytania

Politics + space + royalty of course interest me xD And this had been much better than I expected it to be. It had its share of annoying characters, but it also had great ones! ^_^ Story’s also doing better and better. Animation didn’t impress me much though, but still, overall it had been good xD

IMPRESSIVE SERIES
Shows that I didn't get super addicted but definitely had amazed me. They had been so much better than they seemed to be xD

Antique Bakery
Very impressive story. It’s not simply about running a bakery business, it’s no ordinary bakery in the first place and there’s some mystery going around. Characters had been fun on their own way and even if there’s gay stuff, it’s not solely for BL fanservice. Art on the characters may not be pretty, but cg backgrounds were nice. And the cakes are so real that they’re mouthwatering *_*

Blassreiter
Yes, Gonzo had been terrible in some shows but this is one of their good ones. I like the CG in this one, and motorcycle races here are WOW *_* Story’s pretty interesting too *_* It has gore though ^^; So I don’t recommend it to those who hate such ^^;

Eve no Jikan
It’s not some typical human x android romance. The story in this one is deeper and more amazing xD I am really impressed and entertained with this series xD

Kaiba
Don’t let the kiddie art fool ya, because it actually has mature themes ^^; It has an interesting concept on memories and it had a very impressive stories. Very unique series as
well.

Kure-nai
No, it’s no stupid loli show at all. It’s serious and had an impressive and deep story. It’s actually good. It had awesome women but I hope it had more guys xD Hehe.

Kurozuka
It’s gore and very very very very bloody o_o but it had an interesting story, though confusing ^^; I am very impressed with its action scenes *_* I feel like watching a Hollywood movie, and they’re so artistic and badass *_* Oh wow . . . I love immortals xD

Mouryou no Hako
Supernatural + mystery + horror + psychics + crime + religion . . . .what more can I ask? xD It’s quite confusing but it has a very impressive story and great characters. If only Yoriko does not exist, it would have lessened my headaches though ^^;

RD Sennou
It seemed boring but I find it cool and has one of the most unique series ever xD At least, story-wise. I am impressed that it was actually better than I expected it to be ^_^

Shigofumi
Premise seemed simple but this series is actually deeper than it seems ^^; It also had mature themes, so not recommended to young ones. It has a very interesting story and nice characters ^_^ (some are damn annoying though x_x) Overall, it was great ^_^

True Tears
I am very impressed with this series. It seems normal at first, but once I realized that it’s not your usual school romance and characters were no stereotypes, I have enjoyed it until the end ^_^

SECONDARY FANDOMS
Series I also loved a lot xD

Detroit Metal City
One of the hilarious parodies ever xD I am impressed on the dual personality thing, but I wish there had been more development on the story. It would have been better that way. But still, it had been so entertaining xD

Kuroshitsuji
It had a good mix of horror + mystery elements and crack. Sebastian’s definitely one of the coolest butlers out there. My only complain I guess is that the main characters are too cool while minor ones are too pathetic. Balance, please? ^^;

Soul Eater
Bones did a very good job on Soul Eater. Excellent shounen show with horror mix. Overall badass and had a lot of cool and interesting characters. It also had cool fighting scenes ^_^ Animation’s so superb ^_^

Wolf and Spice
I admit that in a way that it was kinda boring but characters here had been impressive. And it’s not usual to see an anime talk about merchant stuff but also had a supernatural mix xD

xxxHolic Kei
It was more serious than the previous season, but it was more awesome as well xD The fun is still there (Watanuki never fails to entertain) and it’s cool that Watanuki has more involvement on the events now ^_^

GUILTY PLEASURES
Series that had been pretty disappointing or weren't that great but I still love it because of fandom bias ^^:

Allison and Lilia
It had a nice story but it’s incredibly slow paced which made it so damn boring x_x But main characters had been interesting, except for Treize’s mom and Lilia . . . I don’t like them much >_>, and overall was pretty refreshing. The boring parts were just too many, and the OP and ED themes did not help!

Hakushaku to Yousei
I like magic in old England but this series only gave bishie fanservice and pretty art ^^; Story-wise, it wasn’t as good as I expected it to be ^^; Nonetheless, it was okay. An dI enjoy the fanservice, wahehehe.

Kannagi
I admit that the story of this show is very very generic and it has a lot of unnecessary fanservice (manga wasn’t that perverted though) but it had been entertaining to me and the main characters had been interesting in their own way. ^_^ It also needs a sequel, it used so many fillers (and had been pretty bad in story development) that it wasn’t able to give a proper ending T_T

Kyou Kara Maou 3rd Season
I still love this series but I lost the enthusiasm to watch it weekly because . . .of Saralegi >_> Bias, yes, but KKM had been less fun for me when he appeared x_X

Kyouran Kazoku Nikki
It was so crack and hilarious. It got me entertained alright xD The family stuff had been touching. The characters were lovable. However, story development went bad around the middle >_> Ending didn’t satisfy me much >_> That’s sad ^^; But still, watching this was fun xD

Monochrome Factor
Honestly, the story’s very stupid and generic, and story development is freakin’ horrible, and has unnecessary fanservice, but . . . it had entertained me xD It had me humored a lot xD I love it. Hehe.

Nabari no Ou
It’s actually a very awesome and interesting supernatural ninja series. My big complain is that it had so much emo stuff and there was too much focus on Miharu and Yoite x_x I love them but, too much of them can be kinda .. sickening ^^;

Persona Trinity Soul
Persona 3 seemed more interesting but this wasn’t that bad. I’s pretty cool and story was interesting. I like the mysterious and mystical vibes it gives. Just eliminate the annoying characters instead the decent ones, this would have been better ^^;

Vampire Knight (& Guilty)
Manga was better but recent events in the manga had been annoying me, and that’s what’s the sequel’s following ^^; It’s actually pretty cool for a vampire school romance. Shoujo is more entertaining with horror, but the angst is just too much. Twilight’s worse though, because at least this one had more decent characters and action scenes

Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei
First season was more epic but it still got the spice. It still has the awesome OP and ED themes xD It’s still freakin’ hilarious xD I just wish it wasn’t episodic ^^; but still, I love the entertainment and non-perverted fanservice xD haha!

BETTER THAN IT SEEMS
as the title indicates xD hehe

Blade of the Immortal
Manga had bored me but anime didn’t. It’s pretty cool and had an interesting story xD Not as bloody as Kurozuka, nor as awesome, but it’s still good ^_^

Chaos; Head
It is harem with perverted fanservice. That’s bad, yes, but it also involves delusions, psychic abilities, and gruesome crimes. Now that is awesome. Main guy may seem pathetic but he’s pretty interesting for a loser. It’s confusing, but it’s pretty cool ^_^

Crystal Blaze
Actually, this is pretty good and interesting, just remove that annoying girl with a terrible voice and thinks she’s good yet a big pathetic coward. It had been impressive on the glass lady stuff. Too bad it wasn’t able to be acknowledged much.

Michiko and Hatchin
I still hate the tough chick + weak girl combo but the weak girl in this series isn’t as annoying as those similar to her position in other series. It’s also pretty good and badass. Some parts are annoying, but still pretty impressive ^_^

Hakaba Kitarou
A really unique horror show. Freaked me out and amused me at the same time. It weirded me out most of the time though o_O It was also disturbing in a way. But overall it was pretty interesting ^_^

Mahou Tsukai no Taisetsu na Koto ~Natsu no Sora~
It was a nice story with a touch of magic and slice of life. The only thing that didn’t impress me much is the romance development of the main couple. The ending was sad and heartwarming at the same time.

Shikabane Hime AKA
The anime adaptation had been more awesome and interesting than the manga, imo. Fight scenes were awesome, that’s Gainax’s magic for ya xD

Toshokan Senshou
It wasn’t as awesome as I expected it to be but it was still good ^_^ Interesting cast too, except the leading lady . . . I don’t hate her but not my type either ^^;

Wagaya no Oinari-sama
A main character with two genders? That’s not usual xD Story wasn’t that bad either. I don’t like it that it’s kinda episodic but it had been fun ^_^

DISAPPOINTMENTS
There are more actually, but these are the ones that could have been good but . . *sigh*

Birdy the Mighty Decode
I didn’t appreciate the manga but anime turned out to be pretty good. However, I lost the excitement to watch this when a certain character died >_> Not enjoyable without him >_>

Bus Gamer
Interesting premise but story flow wasn’t impressive. I expected better from Kazuya Minekura, but I guess this wasn’t one of her best works ^^; Overall, it wasn’t that horrible but still a disappointment ^^;

Ga-Rei Zero
It had a very very badass first episode but following episodes had so much yuri and Kagura was so annoying I can’t stand her anymore x_x I hope it had focused on the cast of the first episode instead ;_; but gotta admit, this had been a cool and impressive show. Just not to my liking >_>

Nijuu Mensou Musume
It was very very good in the beginning but after a certain character died, all this detective girl stuff had been stupid. I am disappointed . . .it was so promising at first ;_;

The Tower of Druaga ~Aegis of URUK~
Its first episode was epic crack but the following episodes had been pretty generic and boring. But it wasn’t that bad either.

KINDA OKAY
pretty bearable ^^; and okay to watch I guess

Neo Angelique Abyss (& 2nd Age)
Your typical reverse harem with so many bishies protecting a damsel-in-distress-who-is-only-useful-on-the-last-minute, indeed. Lacks creativity, fight scenes aren’t impressive, leading girl’s a mary sue, and there are more flaws but, honestly, it wasn’t that bad.

Tales of the Abyss
Many people find it awesome but I didn’t see what’s great about it. It had only bored and annoyed me honestly. But I’m beginning to see what’s good about it on its second half. It might not be as bad as I thought ^^;

To Aru Majutsu no Index
Religion + supernatural + psychic stuff . . . how could I resist that? xD It’s actually pretty good and interesting, but characters, for some reason, had not impressed me much. Same goes for the story. And that moe loli teacher did not help -_- Too absurd for my brain.

World Destruction ~Sekai Bokumetsu no Rokunin~
It had an interesting premise but story development didn’t turn out great. It’s actually pretty bad, but I dunno why I still watched it. Ending was also predictable and a “saved-by-a-miracle type, but overall it wasn’t that horrible.

Yozakura Quartet
It was kinda generic but not that bad either ^^: Some characters were pathetic but some were also pretty interesting ^_^ Overall, it had been pretty good ^_^

There are gazillions more to mention but that will only make this entry even longer x_x I am lazy to edit. That's all. I'll try to do a better job on the 2009 version ^^;

ranking, anime
