Erica and Anna were enjoying an early breakfast together. Callie loved to sleep late when she didn’t have anything scheduled early, but Erica had never been a late sleeper. She liked to get up at the crack of dawn and enjoy the solitude and quietness of early mornings. She wasn’t surprised to see Anna already eating breakfast when she came downstairs.
“Good morning, Anna. Early riser as well?” she greeted Callie’s mom.
“Erica, good morning to you too. You could say I’m an early riser. Calliope definitely didn’t inherit her sleeping habits from me”, Anna chuckled.
“That’s true.”
“Coffee?”
“Please.”
Anna really liked the younger woman. She genuinely seemed to care for Callie. They spend a lot of time together, almost every free minute Callie had, she’s spend it with Erica. She didn’t believe what Callie had told her about the fire in Erica’s apartment. There was something more to that story. She knew her daughter was hiding something from her, but she couldn’t put her finger on it. There was another reason why Erica was here. If Callie didn’t want to tell her the truth, maybe Erica would.
“So you met Calliope at yoga class?”
Erica nodded. “I heard it’s good for your body and it helps you relax too, so I wanted to give it a try. We started talking that first class and we immediately hit off.”
“You’re not originally from LA, are you? Until 10 years ago, I lived in LA, I’m born and raised here, so is Calliope. But my husband, ex-husband now, wanted to move to Miami and I followed him. When he left me, I decided to stay in Miami.”
Erica had an idea where this conversation was heading, and she wasn’t liking it.
“You are right, I’m not from LA. I recently moved here. I’m from the East Coast”, Erica vaguely said.
“What do you think about Jason?” Anna abruptly changed the topic of their conversation.
She could see Erica tense with the mentioning of Jason.
“He will never be a friend of mine”, Erica curtly said.
“Don’t worry, I don’t like him either. I don’t think he’s right for my daughter. I don’t trust him. Last night I accidentally heard part of a conversation between them and I found out he’s been physically hurting Calliope.”
“Anna, it’s not my place to talk about what… might have happened.” Erica chose her words carefully.
“Calliope confides in you?”
“Yes, she does and I will not betray her trust, Anna. I hope you understand that.”
“I understand. I’m glad she has someone to talk to about it. I’m also glad I’m not the only one disliking Jason anymore.”
They continued their breakfast in silence. Erica was glad that Anna had stopped asking her all these questions. She’d never betray Callie’s trust about what she had told her about Jason. If Callie wanted her mother to know, she’d tell her and if not, then that was Callie’s decision. It wasn’t her decision to make.
Suddenly Anna took Erica’s hand. “Erica, I’m glad my Calliope has found a friend in you. I can see you care about her a lot.” She looked intently at the blonde woman, but didn’t notice any changes on her face. “I hope that when things get rough with Jason, that you will be there to help her. Because believe me, things will get rough with him. I know his type and they only bring trouble. I was married to one for years.”
“I’ll do my best to keep her safe from him.”
“Thank you.”
At 10am Erica went to Callie’s room to wake her up. She knocked on the door and when she didn’t get any response, she gently opened the door and found Callie sitting on her bed, listening to her iPod.
“I’m sorry, I thought you were still sleeping”, Erica started apologizing when she realized Callie wasn’t sleeping anymore.
“Come in. I didn’t hear you knocking.”
Erica went to sit on the bed next to Callie. “I thought you’d still be sleeping.”
“Yeah well, so did I, but sleep has been evading me lately. What time is it?”
“10 am, you asked me to wake you at 10.”
“I had no idea it was this late already.”
“What were you listening to?”
“Just some cheesy songs that help me put my feelings on one line.”
“Oh… I’ll just…” Erica wanted to leave the room, but Callie grabbed her hand.
“Erica, don’t go. Music helps me to sort out my thoughts. You know I’m confused about what I feel for you. I’ve dated men for 20 years, so having feelings for a woman is a huge change for me. And then there’s Jason too and sometimes it all gets a bit too much to cope with at once.”
“You know you can always talk to me about it, even about Jason, Cal. I’m still your friend and I’ll always listen to what you have to say.”
“Thanks. I have to go to the studio this afternoon and this evening I have an interview about my upcoming album. Will you come with me? My mom is meeting some business acquaintances today, so I don’t have to worry about her.”
“Sure, I’ll come.”
***************************************************************************
“My favourite two ladies”, Carlos greeted Callie and Erica when they entered the studio.
“Carlos”, Callie smiled. “How are you doing?”
“I’m fine, and you, mija?”
“I’m great. So why did you want to meet me today? I thought the album was all finished?”
“You are impatient, Calliope. She’s impatient, isn’t she, Erica?”
“Maybe a bit”, Erica chuckled. Callie had already asked her in the car why Carlos would want to meet her at the studio today. The recording of her new album was finished, so there wasn’t any reason for them to be at the studio. So she knew Callie was a bit impatient to find out why she had to go to the studio.
“Well, two reasons why I wanted you here, Calliope. Firstly, one of the songwriters has written a beautiful song that I want on your new album. Secondly, I have news about your promo tour to New York City”, Carlos told Callie.
“A new song? It must be a very good one if you want to add it after the deadline for the recording. And what’s the news about NYC?” Callie excitedly said.
“The song is called ‘Already gone’ and it’s perfect for you. The song is going to be a big hit. And you are going to New York, for a promo tour of 2 weeks”, Carlos announced.
“A promo tour to NYC? That’s great! When?”
“We are still discussing the dates, but it should be in a few weeks. I’m trying to get you on some shows and it depends on when the producers of the show can get you in. When I know, I’ll let you know.”
Carlos handed a CD to Callie. “Listen to this song, it’s the one I talked about. You are going to love it.”
Callie took the CD and put it in the player. The voice of an unknown singer filled the studio.
Remember all the things we wanted
Now all our memories, they're haunted
We were always meant to say goodbye
Even with our fists held high
It never would have work out right, yeah
We were never meant for do or die
I didn't want us to burn out
I didn't come here to hurt you now I can't stop
Callie listened attentively to the song. “You are right, Carlos, it’s perfect, absolutely perfect. When do you want to record it? I need some time to study it.”
“Whenever you are ready, Calliope, but as soon as possible.”
The next hour Callie practised the song. Erica was listening, mesmerized again by Callie’s voice. Even when just practising, she was putting so much emotion in her singing.
I want you to know
That it doesn't matter
Where we take this road
But someone's gotta go
And I want you to know
You couldn't have loved me better
But I want you to move on
So I'm already gone
After one hour, Callie took a break. She was sipping her water and went to sit next to Erica.
“Do you like the song?” she asked.
“Yes, it’s beautiful.” She wanted to add “just like you”, but she thought better of it. “Carlos is right, it’s a perfect song for you.”
“Thanks. We should probably leave soon if we want to be on time for that interview. Do you want to grab some dinner afterwards?”
“Sure.”
“Okay, I’ll tell Carlos I can record the song in a few days. I’ll be right back.”
*************************************************************************
The interview took longer than anticipated, so it was already late when they could go for dinner.
“What do you say we grab some take out food on the way home and eat there? It’s already late”, Callie asked Erica.
“Great idea, I was just thinking the same. What do you want to eat?”
“How about that Thai place we both like so much? They do take away too.”
“Perfect.”
After they had gotten their dinner, they went home. The house was still dark, so Callie figured her mother was still out. They took out the bags and placed them on the kitchen counter. A few minutes later, they were enjoying dinner.
“Erica”, Callie asked, “will you come with me to NYC? I’d like for you to come.”
Erica was contemplating her answer. She’d love to accompany Callie, but she had her case to think of too. She just couldn’t let Jason out of her sight for the time she was in NYC with Callie. Maybe she could arrange something with the office here in LA, maybe they could take over if necessary. It wasn’t like there was much happening with Jason anyway, at least not anything drug related. Callie barely tolerated Jason at the moment, so she wouldn’t be getting much information from her concerning Jason.
But she couldn’t tell Callie all this, so she had to find a reason to tell Callie why she wasn’t sure she could accompany her to NYC. She’d love nothing more than to go with Callie, but she couldn’t forget her case either.
“Maybe you’d better discuss that with Carlos first. Maybe the plan is that he goes with you”, Erica suggested.
“I don’t want him to come with me, I want you to come. But you are right, I’d better talk to him about it. But if he says it’s okay, will you come?”
Callie was looking at her with a pleading in her eyes.
“If Carlos says it’s okay, I’ll come”, Erica finally said.
They cleaned up their plates and moved to the living room. They sat on the couch together.
“Have you already talked to your mom about your DUI?” Erica asked.
Callie shook her head. “I don’t know what to tell her. I mean, I can’t tell her the truth about why I lost all my senses and got drunk, can I?” Callie sighed.
“Tell her whatever you told Carlos. It seemed to work for him, he hasn’t asked any more questions about it.”
“That might work, if only my mom wasn’t so psychic about always knowing when I’m lying. So she’ll know I’m lying.”
“But it’s better than not telling her anything at all, is it.”
“I know, I’ll think about it.”
Unknowing, Callie scooted closer to Erica until they were sitting closely together.
“How’s your neck?” Erica asked.
“The bruises are gone, but it still hurts when I touch it. But at least it’s not visible anymore.”
Erica had been wanting to ask Callie a question ever since she knew Callie had gotten back together with Jason. The question had been haunting her.
“Will you drop charges against Jason now that you are back together with him?” she tentatively asked.
“No, I didn’t drop the charges against him.”
“I’m glad for that. He should be punished for hurting you like that”, Erica said with anger in her voice.
“I’m fine, Erica, don’t get angry, please. I’m fine.”
“If you were my girlfriend, I’d never hit you or hurt you. I’d give you love instead of beating. I’d cherish you and love you”, Erica said with sadness in her voice.
When Erica looked up to Callie, she saw tears in Callie’s eyes.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean…” she started to apologize.
“No, don’t”, Callie stopped her. “These are tears of happiness because what you said was so beautiful. When all this shit with Jason is over, we’ll be together, sweetie. I can’t wait to call you my girlfriend.”
They sat in comfortable silence. Both were enjoying the closeness they shared.
“Was it difficult to accept you’re gay?” Callie suddenly asked.
“Not really. Somehow I have always known I’d never date any men. I never found men attractive. So when I fell in love with Cathy, I wasn’t really concerned that she was a woman. I was more concerned with the fact that she was my best friend, my only friend.”
Erica turned to face Callie. “You know, Cal, you don’t have to label yourself. Just be who you are.”
Erica saw a smile appear on Callie’s face. “Will you still be my girlfriend even if I can’t identify myself as being gay?”
“Yes, Callie.”
They were staring intently into each other eyes. Erica could see so much confusion in Callie’s eyes, but also a longing to be loved, to be cared for. She took Callie’s face in her hands and gently caressed it. She wanted to fulfil Callie’s longing, she wanted to take away all the confusion and hurt she was showing.
Callie didn’t know how much longer she could take this. Her feelings for Erica were overwhelming. It was getting more difficult to hide them. She wasn’t even sure if she wanted to hide them at all.
“Kiss me”, she whispered while closing the gap between them.
They slowly kissed. Both knew in the back of their mind, that they shouldn’t be doing this, but the attraction was too strong, the heart was quickly gaining an upper hand on the mind and there was nothing they could do about it.
Erica pulled Callie on top of her. She wanted to feel everything of Calliope Torres, every curve, every fibre of her body. The kissing became more feverish.
Callie wanted to feel more of Erica. She gently put her hand under Erica’s shirt and started tracing slow circles on Erica’s body. It was driving Erica insane. She knew if Callie didn’t stop soon, she’d take her right here. So with difficulty, she stopped kissing Callie.
“Cal, sweetie”, she breathlessly said, “we have to stop.”
“I don’t want to stop”, Callie said, while continuing to kiss Erica, this time her neck.
“Oh god…” Erica moaned. “Cal, if you don’t stop now…”
Callie stopped kissing and looked intently at Erica. Erica could see her eyes were filled with love and lust and passion.
“I don’t want to stop, I want all of you, Erica. Make love to me”, she said in a passion filled voice.
That got Erica even more aroused. “Bedroom… now.”
They continued kissing while they were racing to Callie’s room. Once inside, clothes were discarded and thrown everywhere. Neither had ever felt more on fire than right now. There was no turning back, no stopping this. The heart had won over the mind. They didn’t care about the consequences, they only cared about now, how the other was making them feel.
***************************************************************************
Downstairs Anna had gotten home from her day out with her business friends. She was home later than she thought. She found the house empty, even though the lights downstairs were still on.
She went upstairs. Maybe Callie was in her room. When she got upstairs, she heard noises.
“That sounds like moaning”, she thought. “Well, Calliope is a grown up girl, she can have sex.”
The moaning got louder. “This is getting embarrassing”, she thought.
She quickly went to her room and just as she passed Callie’s room, she heard her cry out.
“Ericaaaaaaaaaaaa.”
“Erica? Oh my god”, she said before quickly closing the door of her room.
A/N: the song is "Already Gone" by Kelly Clarkson. I'm totally in love with that song so I just had to add it to this fic :). Hope you enjoy this update. Thank you all for the lovely comments. I'll update more frequently from now on. I'm writing the last part now.
