The weekend......

Saturday found me at the Kokomah Living history Encampment with my brohers and sisters...3 hours of walking to the various exhibts and sampling various wares......Its a strange mix of history and present...People in their costumes...Men dressed as Indians in their scant loin cloths, and bare legs. their bodies painted with red paint..to give the whites skinned of them the apperance of being Indian. rings throught their noses, feathers glued to their shaved heads...walking around..A part of me wonders...Is there anything under there? hmm.... women in the pioneer styled skirts and hats...In a canvas covered booth two ladies sit in chair, spindels in hand making lace....such beautiful pictures, all done by their hands.....A little farther down theirs the candy stand....for a $1.00 a bag the kids get some old style hard candy...a litte past thier a very pleasant young woman, in a calico dress and straw hat with silk roses on it...sits on a four poster bed..until we come up, and she smiles and talks with us as the kids select their licorice whips from her large glass draw...
There is some thing about this place, that brings back each year..I love the smells of this place...camp fires and the smell of the various foods for sell.....I buy an ear of corn and a hot cup of sider, the kids buy a brown bottle of rootbeer and a sausage on a stick, and we walk to the log that will serve as our bench to watch the battle that they stage every year...
black powder shots BOOM below us......the flutes and drums sound an advancing unit to the left of us..from the trees just out of view the mournful sound of bagpipes...to our right....w war cry from a very realistic looking indian echos through the valley they are in...The war has begun...then the ground shakes as the cannons are fired in the fort beside us....JAreds eyes watch the scene unfold...different than last year.....A red coat has been shot...and the actor dies a very dramatic death...then lays there convulsing periodiclly through the remaining battle...20 mins later the indians have retreated to the trees and we get up to take our leave for the year..
On the way home excited chatter from Jared and Mariah fills the car....What they liked best adn they cant wait to next year...
I know one day they will not want to go to these things with me, so this is my secret joy to remeber these moments for ever...and when they are older and too cool to be seen with big sister I will remeber when they were small and walked through holding my hand or tryig t get my attention to show me something that amazed them...and whenn i look at the deformed candles we made..I will smile...because at that time and place...I was cool
