Classes are officially over pour moi, as of 11 am this morning.
After lunch we went exploring in Macon's old industrial district with my faithful Keane in tow. I parked at Macon Central Park and we walked a couple of miles to the abandoned Miyazaki-esque mill. Along the path we walked through an old cemetery. It was a large field with healthy and lush grass covering it completely. The graves, which dated as far back as 1796, were sporadic and randomly placed. Most of the graves were crumbling, illegible, and had been broken open.
Once through the field, we continued onto the Miyazaki Tower. There we met Sean and Sebastian, and discovered a bit more about the place. (And of course Keane took photographs, as he had been doing all along the way)
We then proceeded to recover our tracks (not literally, as we returned on the opposite side of the road in order to explore a bit more. A lovely summer shower cooled us off as the car was in sight. We then went to get sandwiches for lunch, and my companion was hit on by a man with a horrid gold "grill."
Oh yes, and then we went to the Macon Mart and bought Sean a loaf of bread, peanut butter, cracker jacks, a large bottle of cold water, and a couple other very small gifts. We returned to his abode and apologized for not introducing ourselves properly. All four "S"s stared at each other through the chain link and vines. He told us of his pilgrimage to Savannah which ended beneath this shadow of a forgotten economy only because his arthritis got too bad to carry on.
He cared more for Sebastian's well being than his own, and while Sebastian was healthy and clean, Sean was emaciated and dirty. I can only hope that our gifts might have had even some small impact.
We bid him farewell, and returned to campus, where the surreal world retreated, but left us with a lingering sense of wonder and happiness. Three of us went on a light two mile run (which was refreshing but proved to me once and for all that my asthma is no longer in remission - it will pass, and serves me right for sacrificing running for other forms of exercise). Now, I am readying myself for the midnight movie to kick off 'studying for finals.'
In much less than a week I will be home, spending every Saturday caring for my father (except AZ weekend). Weekdays are my own to use, and Sunday I will rest (read?).
