Chapter 3

It had been almost two weeks since Ryo joined Cosmos and their first performance would be next week. It would be used as introducing Ryo and their new song that was going to be released as a single a month later. Cosmos was training hard every day. Ryo felt tired but he was happy. He had gotten closer to Mika and the guys. Mika was really easy to be around with; the only thing that bothered Ryo about Mika was Mika’s close relationship with Tatsuya.

It hurt to think about Tatsuya. He had trusted him more than anyone else ever. They had been so similar with Tatsuya, they understood each other and Ryo had felt like no matter what was going to happen, Tatsuya would be there. That only proved to be bullcrap when he caught Tatsuya hanging out with the enemy gang. The guys in the enemy gang were older, more powerful, so Ryo thought Tatsuta wanted to become cooler, more powerful and had decided to ditch him and join the enemies. Just like that! And on top of that Tatsuya had never done anything else but lied to him.

He had run into Tatsuya a few times in the agency but mostly they were so busy they didn’t run into each other. Which was good. Ryo had also seen Tatsuya’s band. For some reason he couldn’t imagine Tatsuya with those guys but they seemed to get along just fine. It somehow annoyed Ryo.

“Geez, did I really have to forget the damn phone, walk all the way to the subway station and THEN noticed I’d forgotten it,” Ryo muttered to himself while getting out of the elevator. He was hungry, tired and wanted nothing more than to get home and sleep and of course just on that day he had to forget his cell phone.

He opened the door to the rehearsal room and was met by a confusing but still annoying scene. Mika and Tatsuya were on the couch, laughing their heads off, Tatsuya leaning his head against Mika’s chest looking like he was crying at the same time. Mika wasn’t much better. She was holding Tatsuya with one arm and with her other hand she was wiping her face.

“Oh, Ryo. What’s up?” Mika tried to ask while trying to breathe at the same time. Tatsuya had stopped laughing the moment he saw Ryo and pulled away from Mika. Ryo stared at the sight for a moment.

“Forgot my phone,” Ryo said then ignoring Tatsuya’s presence. He found his phone and made his way towards the door.

“G-good luck to your first performance Ry- Nishikido,” he heard Tatsuya say from behind him. For some reason the comment made him angry. He turned slowly towards Tatsuya with ice cold eyes.

“You wish for me to fail, don’t you,” Ryo said and thought he saw Mika shiver at the coldness he used in his tone. Then he turned without staying to listen what Tatsuya might say.

He made it to the elevator, all the way cursing Tatsuya inside his head like nothing else ever before, when Mika ran up with him.

“He didn’t mean it in a bad way, you know,” Mika said.

“A betrayer like him wishing me luck is like going to death row,” Ryo muttered.

“Ne, Ryo. Did you ever let him explain to you what happened?” Mika asked the question Ryo had sometimes thought himself. Should he have let Tatsuya explain? He still didn’t know for sure but told himself that Tatsuya would have kept on lying if he gave him the opportunity to explain.

“I don’t want to listen to his lies,” Ryo just said.

“I’m sure he had a reason for whatever he did,” Mika said. Ryo tsk’ed. So Mika still didn’t know what Tatsuya had done. He immediately thought it was because Tatsuya had really betrayed him and he didn’t understand anymore why he was listening to Tatsuya’s best friend to try and get him to do… well he didn’t know what Mika was trying to do exactly.

“You don’t even know what happened,” Ryo turned to Mika with dangerous look in his eyes.

“Then tell me,” Mika answered calmly.

“Why would I tell you? Ueda’s best friend,” Ryo asked and stepped inside the elevator not staying to listen what Mika was going to say.

****----****

Ryo’s first performance with Cosmos was a success. The feeling he got on the stage was better than any feeling he’d ever had before. The host of the show had been interested to know everything about Ryo then and there but they left many things hanging to keep the mystery curtain around Ryo some time longer.

Ryo needed to drown himself in the world of music because whenever he stopped playing his mind would be filled with disturbing thoughts of Tatsuya. Two days earlier they had somehow managed to have so bad luck that they had ended up in a same elevator. Alone. The atmosphere had been so suffocating that Ryo thought he would faint.

“I-… M-Mika said you’re doing well,” Tatsuya had ended up saying when he couldn’t take the silence any longer. He just had to say something.

“Like you’d care,” Ryo answered with an ice cold tone. Tatsuya lowered his head saddened about Ryo’s comment. Of course he cared, he had always only cared for Ryo. Somehow his caring for Ryo had ended up hurting Ryo. It was better than having Ryo dead, though.

“I do,” Tatsuya whispered but it was loud enough for Ryo to hear it. “I’m… happy for you. I really am”.

Ryo was taken aback by Tatsuya’s words and he almost believed those words. Then his mind kicked in laughing at his face and mocking him how he was falling for Tatsuya’s lies once again. He grabbed Tatsuya by the collar and pushed him against the elevator wall.

“A traitor like you doesn’t care about those he betrayed. Don’t even try to pretend anything else,” Ryo spat the words at Tatsuya’s face just before the elevator doors opened and he got away from the situation.

The conversation still bothered Ryo. Tatsuya had sounded so honest, like he really would have cared. He couldn’t help but feel like the words were the truth.

“Ohayou!” Mika came inside the rehearsal room. It was the next morning after their performance. Ryo was the only one who had arrived.

Ryo nodded his head a bit at Mika and lowered his eyes back to the floor. He heard the footsteps and felt the couch dipping when Mika sat next to him.

“What’s on your mind?” Mika asked.

“Nothing,” Ryo answered too quickly.

“I’m not blind Ryo,” Mika said rolling her eyes. “You can tell me. I may be Tatsuya’s best friend but I’m also your friend. Though I’m guessing this somehow involves Tatsuya”.

“That traitor is a big fat liar,” Ryo said voice trembling from anger.

“Or are you just protecting yourself by making yourself believe that?” Mika asked.

“I don’t need to protect myself from that! I’m totally over that bastard’s betrayal!” Ryo yelled out looking at Mika in the eyes. He was so angry but at the same time he knew how he was lying. He just needed to make Mika believe he was over all of it so that he could maybe believe it himself too someday.

“If you are so over that, then you can tell me what happened, right?” Mika said totally taking advantage of Ryo’s words.

“I… “ Ryo was about to say something but couldn’t.

“Well? I think you’re still not over it, ne,” Mika tried annoying Ryo.

“Shut up! I’m over it. Totally. Completely!” Ryo was so angry he didn’t notice that Mika was slowly getting what she wanted. A smirk formed on her lips.

“Let’s hear it then,” she said with her innocent face.

“We were in a same gang. We agreed about a fight with another gang, with older guys. The next time I saw Ueda, he was part of that gang. He dumped me and went to them to get cooler and more powerful position. That bastard,” Ryo told gritting his teeth together anger still boiling through his veins.

“You think he would have done that even when you were best friends?” Mika asked quietly.

“Best friends? Ha! That bastard never saw me as a best friend. He just used me. Bet everything he ever told me was a lie,” Ryo tsk’ed but his heart hurt. It felt like it was bleeding, like his heart had a hole in it that was slowly getting bigger and bigger.

“Used you?” Mika asked to get more details.

“Yeah. I ruled the school. So of course he should be my best friend to get more power,” Ryo noted logically. Mika nodded and then hugged Ryo.

“I’m sorry you feel like this,” she said. Mika knew Ryo didn’t have the truth because she was certain Tatsuya would never do something like that to Ryo for reason like Ryo had given him. But Ryo was hurting and Ryo was her friend too so she had to comfort him. The truth… she would get it later out of Tatsuya and fix Ryo and Tatsuya’s friendship.

“You’re his best friend. Why bother with me?” Ryo asked. He hadn’t expected Mika to comfort him like that. Not when she was Tatsuya’s best friend and not his.

“I told you I’m your friend. Tatsuya has nothing to do with that,” Mika explained rubbing Ryo’s upper arm slightly with her hand. Ryo felt touched by her words and without noticing it, started to trust the girl more as his friend.

“Jya ne,” Tatsuya waved at his band mates and headed towards his apartment. It was already late and probably they were the last ones to leave the building. It had been a long day especially as his mind was occupied with thoughts of Ryo. It hurt that Ryo hated him so much but it was to be expected. He just hoped they could at least be professional enough to be in friendly terms at work. That seemed to be impossible for Ryo to even consider.

All of a sudden his arm was grabbed and he was pulled on an alley and thrown against a wall. A hand landed on his mouth to stop him from yelling out loud.

“Long time no seen, doll,” a dangerous dark voice said with a clear evil smirk on his face. Tatsuya recognized that voice right away. He thought he would never hear that voice again in anywhere else but his nightmares.

“K-Kuroda,” Tatsuya’s voice came out in a trembling whisper. “H-how?”

“I escaped from the prison,” Kuroda told that evil look in his eyes. Tatsuya noticed just then how there were three other guys on the alley with them.

“But seriously. You just had to go and get me in prison and become a world-famous idol yourself. How’s that fair?” Kuroda leaned dangerously closer to Tatsuya’s face. “I thought we had a deal,” he whispered but it was loud enough for the others to hear as well. Tatsuya was trembling with fear. He tried to look for a way to escape from the situation but it seemed impossible.

“Y-you belong to prison,” Tatsuya tried to look strong but was failing miserably.

“Maybe,” Kuroda looked amused for a moment but then the cold mask returned, “But our deal is still on”.

“No, it’s not,” Tatsuya shook his head trying to see if someone was walking on the street but there was no one there for his rescue.

“Bring me 3 million yen in two days,” Kuroda ordered. “Or I swear I’ll find that little friend of yours and kill him”.

Tatsuya’s eyes shot wide in shock. If Kuroda put it that way, there was no way he could not do whatever Kuroda told him to do.

“I-I can’t get that much money in that short time,” Tatsuya was telling the truth. Even as an idol he didn’t have that much money to just suddenly give away to someone.

“Then, how long do you think you need?” Kuroda asked again with a very dangerous voice.

“T-two weeks?” Tatsuya tried.

“You get one week,” Kuroda pushed Tatsuya harder against the wall before he stepped aside and nodded to those three men. Tatsuya knew right away what was coming but he didn’t have time to react anyway when the first punch was already landed on his stomach.

Kuroda just leaned against the opposite wall with an evil smirk on his face and just watched how his ‘doll’ was beaten up. He wanted to see that face showing the suffering the owner was feeling as much as possible. And he had just started.

Ryo was once again having his bento box alone in Cosmos rehearsal room. The others have been offering to buy him lunch from wherever they were going but Ryo refused saying that he enjoyed spending lunch time alone. Which was true, he enjoyed having a small quiet time of his own in their rehearsal room. The life he was leading then still felt too surreal for him. During lunch time he could get all giddy about it all on his own without anyone noticing it.

The door to the rehearsal room was opened and a pouting Mika came to the room and plopped on the couch next to Ryo.

“Um… what happened?” Ryo asked carefully from the girl who just stayed quiet after getting on the couch, sulking.

“Mou… Tatsuya ditched me and he won’t even pick up the damn phone,” Mika whined and crossed her arms on her chest. Ryo couldn’t help but chuckle at the look on the girl’s face.

“He does that a lot,” Ryo muttered mostly to himself but Mika heard him.

“But that’s just it. He doesn’t do that. At all! I hope everything ok with him,” Mika sighed.

“And what could have happened to him?” Ryo tsk’ed with clear sarcasm.

“Look, I know you don’t like Tatsuya at the moment but could you just not talk about him like that when I’m worried?” Mika turned her head towards Ryo and asked the question eyes pleading. Ryo felt guilty right away.

“…Sorry,” he muttered and returned to his lunch.

“I’ll try to call him again,” Mika sighed and took out the phone. He had just pressed the call button when there was a knock on the door.

“Come in,” Ryo spoke up. A face he didn’t remember appeared in the door frame. His face looked confused as he looked around.

“A, Mika-san. Do you know where Tatsuya is?” the boy asked.

“I’m just trying to call him,” Mika answered. The phone was not picked up.

“I wonder where he went…” the boy wondered.

“He came in today? He didn’t call in sick, did he?” Mika asked.

“Yeah, he came in. I didn’t know you two do wrestling,” the boy said innocently then looking at Mika a bit weirdly.

“Wrestling?” only Ryo seemed to notice that Mika was confused about this sentence.

“Yeah. That’s why Tatsuya couldn’t dance well today. He said you two were wrestling last evening and he hurt himself,” the boy explained.

“Ah… heh… Sorry. We’ll try to… not do that often, Yuya,” Mika ruffled her hair.

“Thanks. The choreographer wasn’t too happy. I think we have to stay over-time today,” Yuya smiled a bit.

“Sorry again. Tell Tatsuya to call me when you see him,” Mika said. Yuya nodded and left. There was a small silence during what Ryo made sure the boy got far enough not to hear what he was going to say next.

“Wrestling, huh?” Ryo raised an eyebrow.

“Never done it before. At least not in a way that neither of us would have gotten hurt. Something’s off,” Mika looked even more worried than earlier.

“Maybe he met that old gang of his. Or is he still part of it?” Ryo wondered out loud.

“Ryo. We’re idols. Tatsuya wouldn’t be part of any gang in his position,” Mika reasoned.

“Yeah, you’re right,” Ryo muttered. He didn’t want to admit it but he was curious about Tatsuya’s case and his weird behavior.
