Chapter 2

Ryo walked in to the building he had never entered before. He was carrying his guitar in a guitar bag on his left shoulder. In his right hand he had a bag full of other things. He walked to the person in the lobby and asked about Mika and his audition.

“Wait a moment,” the man said, lifted a phone and dialed a number. He exchanged a couple quiet words on the phone and then turned to Ryo after ending the call.

“Take the elevator to 11th floor. Someone will come and get you from there.”

“Thanks,” Ryo bowed a bit. He started to feel nervous. He didn’t see himself as a great guitarist but his dream was to play in a band and become famous. After Tatsuya betrayed him, he lost his way. He had been devastated. Tatsuya had literally been a person he would have died for and that person betrayed him just like that.

Only two years after Tatsuya changed schools did he find his way again when he held the guitar for the first time. After that he had played a lot and learned new things, trying to master them. So far, he had never played in front of anyone. And there he was, on his way to go and play as an amateur in front of professional musicians. His heart beat was getting faster and faster.

The elevator way seemed to take longer than it should but it gave Ryo enough time to close his eyes and drew in deep breaths, trying to calm his racing heart.

“Ryo!” he heard a happy voice as soon as the elevator doors opened he stepped outside. Mika was there, waving at him a wide smile on her face. Rryo created a nervous smile back at her and walked towards her.

“Thanks for coming. You seem nervous,” Mika landed a hand on Ryo’s shoulder. Ryo looked at the hand confused. Was the girl hitting on him? He returned his eyes on Mika.

“I am nervous,” Ryo ruffled his hair a bit trying to ignore the hand on his shoulder.

“No need to. We’re all laid back persons. Come on,” Mika patted Ryo’s shoulder twice, dropped her hand and started to lead the way. They entered a room. The sign next to the door said ‘Cosmos rehearsal room’ and it sure looked like it. A guy was sitting behind the drums playing a bit. He stopped playing though, when the door was opened. The other two guys were sitting on the opposite wall from all the instruments. One sat on the couch and other on the floor with some papers.

“Is this the guy?” the one on the floor asked.

“Yep. He’s the one,” Mika smiled.

“Nishikido Ryo desu. Yoroshiku,” Ryo bowed. The others bowed their heads a bit.

“Let’s see what you’re made of then Nishikido Ryo,” the guy from behind the drums stood up and walk to Ryo to push him more in the room. Then he went to sit on the couch.

“Take your time to get ready,” Mika smiled at Ryo.

“Thanks,” Ryo answered, again very nervous. He could feel his hands trembling when he started to take out his guitar and prepared himself. Mika went to the guy who was sitting on the floor and sat between the guys’ legs to lean against his chest. The guy didn’t seem to mind and just wrapped his arm around Mika like it was the most normal thing to do.

They must be dating. Ryo noted to himself. He wasn’t exactly interested in Mika in that way but at least now he knew not to even do the harmless flirting with the girl.

The Cosmos members waited patiently while Ryo got ready. They didn’t say a word but they didn’t stare at Ryo either, so he didn’t feel too uncomfortable.

“Ok, I’m ready,” Ryo let out at last.

“Can you play any of our songs?” the guy from the couch who yet hadn’t spoken anything so far asked then.

“I… I know one,” Ryo admitted.

“Do you mind playing it? It’s the easiest to hear how you’ll do with our music if you play our music,” the guy explained.

“Ok,” Ryo nodded placing his fingers on the right places.

“Don’t think about us. Just play from the bottom of your heart and pretend we’re not here,” Mika said before Ryo could start. Ryo nodded again and concentrated on his fingers. And then he started to play.

The song was one of the first songs Cosmos had come out with. He had been playing the song for fun at home for some times. He liked the song and he felt like he knew the story behind the song. After first five seconds Ryo had forgotten everyone else in the room. He got so drown in the world of the song that he was part of the song. His fingers moved on his own as the song went forward.

The song was over almost faster than he could realize it and then he realized where he was, blushed and lowered his head a bit. The room was quiet. Ryo noticed how Mika turned to whisper something to the guy’s ear he was leaning on. Ryo couldn’t see her face. The guy smiled and brought his hand on Mika’s face. Ryo didn’t understand what the guy was doing.

“Well, it’s clear you moved Mika. You made her cry,” the guy who had been behind the drums grinned at Ryo.

“Eh?” Ryo turned to look Mika better and indeed the girl was crying. She stood up and came to Ryo. Before Ryo could react the girl hugged him. His eyes widened and his body went all stiff.

“Welcome to the band, bro,” the guy from the floor came to pat his shoulder friendly.

“W-what?” Ryo still didn’t understand the situation.

“You made it. You get the spot. That is, if you want it,” Mika let go of him and looked him in the eyes.

“I… I want it,” Ryo managed to say.

“Finally we can get down with the business,” the guy who had sat on the couch from the very beginning stood up smiling. “I’m Junno, I play the keyboard”.

“I’m Hiroki, bass,” the guy who had cuddled Mika in front of all of their eyes introduced himself. Ryo nodded at the two of them.

“I’m Yamapi. The drums belong to me,” the last guy introduced himself. Ryo nodded to him too.

Ryo had a good feeling. He was sure his life would change for the better from then on. He didn’t think he would find out some very shocking things before that.

Cosmos started their rehearsals the very next day with their new guitarist Ryo. They had a lot of work to do to get Ryo learn all their songs. Ryo met their manager who got all excited and started to prepare a TV appearance for them including an interview and a chance to perform a song. At best that could happen inside 3 weeks so they mostly concentrated on one of Cosmos’ new songs so that their performance would be perfect.

Ryo was surprised how well he was taken in to the band and how well he fit in with them. He got along with all of the guys but Mika confused him more and more all the time. When he came to the rehearsals in the morning, Mika came in carried by Yamapi and those two also had a rather intimate looking hugging session after Mika got down.

After two hours they got their first break. Ryo took a bottle of water and sat down on the couch, his fingers hurt a bit as he hadn’t really played that long in one go before. Junno came to sit next to him stretching a bit. Mika was talking with Hiroki while Yamapi had gone outside somewhere.

“What’s the deal with Mika?” Ryo asked carefully.

“Depends what interests you about her,” Junno chuckled.

“Is she dating Hiroki or Yamapi?” Ryo asked and was surprised that Junno burst out laughing.

“No, she’s not dating any of us. If you think that’s close and intimate from her, you should see her with Tatsuya,” Junno said still laughing.

“Ueda?” Ryo frowned.

“Hmm, you know him?” Junno asked.

“Hardly,” Ryo murmured.

“Anyways, Mika’s like that. Those are all just friendly actions from her. It takes time to get used to it but no need to take it too seriously. She likes to be close to her friends. Literally,” Junno explained.

“Ok,” Ryo nodded. Yamapi came back to the room.

“Let’s continue,” he said and went behind the drums. And so they continued.

“Have a nice lunch,” Mika wished the three guys who left the room. She stayed alone with Ryo who was still trying out the songs he had learned.

“You’re doing really well you know,” Mika smiled.

“Thanks,” Ryo looked at her quickly and returned to the song. Mika took the mic and started to sing along the song. It made it easier for Ryo to go along the song. He didn’t feel so nervous with someone staring at him in that state.

The song was finished and he finally put down the guitar. He walked to his bag and took out his bento as it was cheaper that way than buy something from the canteen or go out to eat. He wasn’t sure when he would get his first pay check.

“Oh you have a bento box with you. Did you make it?” Mika asked sitting next to Ryo on the couch.

“Yeah. It’s cheaper this way,” Ryo said.

“True. I hope you feel welcomed here with us,” Mika said then.

“I do. The guys are really cool. It’s a bit hard for me to let people close but I feel really good about all this. Thank you for giving me the chance,” Ryo turned to smile at Mika.

“Oh you deserve it. You’ve got the talent, believe me!” Mika patted Ryo’s shoulder again. This time Ryo wasn’t too freaked out about it.

“Ne… can I ask you something?” Mika asked then.

“Sure,” Ryo agreed.

“What happened between you and Tatsuya?” Mika seemed a bit hesitant to ask about it.

“Hasn’t he told you?” Ryo muttered, “I thought you were best friends”. The sentence came out colder than he meant it.

“Yeah we are… but he hasn’t told me. He seems… hurt about the subject,” Mika told him.

“And what would he have to be hurt about? He’s the one who betrayed me!” Ryo almost broke his chopsticks in his anger.

“H-how did he betray you?” Mika asked. Ryo stayed quiet for a long time.

“He joined the enemy. I really don’t want to talk about this subject any more,” Ryo said then. Mika understood and kept her mouth shut. They sat in silence for longer time.

“I’m sorry. Thinking about Ueda just makes me so mad,” Ryo apologized.

“It’s ok,” Mika smiled at him. Ryo could see there was something Mika wanted to say but was glad she didn’t say anything at that moment. The silence around them got better; it didn’t feel so suffocating anymore.

“Aren’t you going for lunch?” Ryo asked after another 5 minutes or so.

“Yeah, I’m just waiting for my company,” Mika said. And after a few more minutes the door to their rehearsal room was opened. Ryo froze the moment he saw Tatsuya at the door. Tatsuya seemed to freeze as well.

“Well, I’m off to lunch now. Sorry to leave you alone,” Mika apologized.

“It’s ok,” Ryo managed before Mika hugged him and left with Tatsuya. Apparently Tatsuya was in the same talent agency. Well damn. Ryo thought. He was in the same band with Tatsuya’s best friend. He wondered how that would turn out. I won’t let you ruin this for me, Ueda. Ryo thought with determination. Tatsuya or no Tatsuya, he would do his best for Cosmos.

****----****

Mika and Tatsuya went to the close-by restaurant to have their lunch like they often did. They had already picked their favourite dishes from the restaurant and the waiters knew what they wanted when they said ‘the usual’.

They talked about their days first, laughing now and then about something funny. After both had finished telling about their days they had the dishes in front of them and they started eating.

“How’s Ryo fitting in?” Tatsuya asked facing his food. He wanted to know Ryo was doing ok. He still loved Ryo, just like he had loved him 5 years ago. He just never got the chance to confess how strongly he felt towards the boy.

“Good. His personality and guitar skills fit our band perfectly. I guess he was a bit freaked out about my behavior but he talked about it with Junno,” Mika explained.

“That’s good,” Tatsuya smiled a bit.

“Ne, Tatsuya. What exactly happened between you and Ryo?” Mika asked.

“I can’t tell you,” Tatsuya was still firmly keeping his eyes on the plate.

“Why not?”

“Because if I told you, I would have to tell you also what happened after it. And… it’s painful,” Tatsuya said. He knew even if he told Mika, the girl wouldn’t abandon him. He knew she would be there for him. She would freak out but she would still love him the same way she did then. It was just too painful to talk about it.

“But you two were really close before whatever happened?” Mika decided not to push that subject further and take a lighter side of the story.

“Yeah,” Tatsuya agreed. Mika studied his face quietly for awhile.

“You love him,” she said then. Tatsuya lowered his head lower as if to hide his face from those sharp eyes that caught too many things from his face. And he knew that wasn’t a question. She knew he loved Ryo.

“Does he know?” Mika asked.

“No and he will not find out,” Tatsuya lifted his eyes at Mika to show he meant it.

“He thinks you betrayed him. I would be an idiot to go and tell him you loved him,” Mika said almost sounding hurt Tatsuya had thought she would go and tell forward something like that.

“Thinks?” Tatsuya raised an eye brow.

“You love him, idiot. You wouldn’t betray him,” Mika noted.

“You sound certain,”

“I am. I know you. I know you didn’t betray him,” Mika said. Tatsuya smiled a bit, it felt good that at least someone knew him that well to say he didn’t betray Ryo. But it didn’t help much as Ryo still thought he betrayed the boy.
