I've really been itching to choreograph lately. But not just choreograph, I don't think... it seems like the desire to direct is buried in there somewhere as well.
I keep wondering what it would be like to have a troupe of dancers either already trained beyond bellydance or willing to push boundaries. I love bellydance, but strictly by itself I find it mildly confining; and if you look, my favorite performers (Zafira, Urban Tribal, Mira Betz, Isadora Bushkovski, etc.) are all ones who really work with movement and dancing, no matter what style the moves come from. I see so much potential for choreography and movement, but it's kind of a hard thing to ask people to do- especially if they don't have the vision themselves. I want to play with different styles and narratives, heavy layering, and movement outside of your typical bellydance vocabulary... I love my troupe, but I really don't think it's fair- and may even be detrimental- to ask them to try to fit that style right now. I haven't even been considering it, and i think things have been healthier now that I've figuratively stepped aside. But I want people to play with, dang it.
I think a lot of this will be relieved just by getting into dancing again. it's been a long time since I have been able to make it to classes to consistantly- there is just no practical way for me to get to them right now- and as a result I haven't been able to be involved in the community. I've been very isolated lately, and honestly let a lot of my practice fall by the wayside. I needed the break, especially to come back with new perspective, but now it's time to come back in full force.
That said, there will be a lot coming up in a hurry. Steph & I start a new choreography this week, I have start a new solo yestreday, and then improv practice... More details as the performances as they come, but for the first of which-
Friday night, August 1st, at Pennsic- there will be a concert for
Ishtar and
Wine and Alchemy. I will be performing with them. (excuse me as I try to withhold my fangirlish glee.-- but fantastic live musicians! hoorah!) It will be AWESOME.
(I really need to get sewing, though.)
