Yuletide Fandoms!

Feb 12, 2010 18:31

I never did get around to making a recs post for yuletide this year, mostly because I never got around to reading half of the things that I was interested in. (Yuletide has gotten HUGE you guys!) So I figured I'd rectify this by reccing a few things today from some of my favorite Yuletide fandoms, specifically stories with women in staring roles. Not all actually written FOR Yuletide, but all in the spirit of small fandom love. :-D For 14valentines Day 12: Education

Her Eyes On Fire by voleuse (Bend It Like Beckham, Jess/Jules/Joe, PG-13)
"Jules." Jess halts the spill of words with a smile, and squeezes Jules' hands. Their palms are warm together. "It doesn't matter."

"How can it not?"

"I like Joe, I do," she sighs, "but I need you. I need you both."

Not Quite A Success Story by Tracy (Say Anything, Diane/Lloyd, PG)
Anyway. It's an awkward life period, and Lloyd's always thought it's stupid to voluntarily display yourself to other people that way. But Corey's organizing the reunion (she's obviously one of the ones who's entirely given up) and Lloyd never says no to her, not when it's in his power to say yes. Plus, it's Christmas, he needs to go home to see his sister anyway, and being alone for the holidays watching DVDs, which he found cool and empowering in his twenties, is starting to get a little depressing.

Throw Away Your Dancing Shoes by Hecate (Center Stage, gen, G)
Maureen thinks she might choose math because it's logical and clean and everything dancing never was. No one could ever tell her that she should do it once more with feeling; no one would be disappointed. She likes the idea. Jim cocks his head, listens, shrugs. Tells her to find something she loves. She's not sure that she can. But she smiles.

Almost There by blindmouse (Mulan/Tarzan, Mulan/Jane, AU, PG)
Jane let her hand slide down the window frame, her shoulders slipping down and her elbows hitting the sill so she was supporting her chin in her hands.

Mulan looked at her clipboard one more time, straightened her shoulders, and strode forward. She was all long legs in perfectly pressed black trousers, her corporate jacket fitted and perfect, her sweep of dark hair restrained in a neat clip that left a spray of black to fall over her ear. She was wearing a determined expression.

The effect in general made Jane's knees a little weak.

Pointillism by sophistry (Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Ferris/Sloane/Cameron, PG-13)
"Nooo," Cameron groans, sounding pained. "I mean - really, Sloane? Really?"

"Really, Cam," she says serenely. "And don't give me that look - this woman is an artist. She is the voice of a generation. What about you - any opinions you want to offer?" (This to Ferris.)

"Hey," Ferris says, spreading his hands. "I'm just impressed that you actually carry the tape around with you."

(Why Can't I) Stop Where I Want To Stay by
atrata (Men With Brooms, gen, PG-13)
"I don't know, Dad, probably. Why don't you just go get a new one? Even if you do manage to find it, it's going to be almost twenty years old."

Her father paused and looked over his shoulder, his forehead creased in thought. "You think it's changed much in twenty years?"

"Yeah," Amy said, her eyes catching again on the photos at her feet. "Everything changes, Dad." She pulled over a newspaper clipping with her toe and covered the pictures. "Even the lake."

The Taste of Honey by Edo no Hana (Sandman, gen, G)
Death perches on a low branch of a laburnum tree, munching on an ice cream cone and swinging her boots two inches above the highest strands of her brother's hair. She takes care not to drip on his head, though she seems to enjoy catching droplets on her tongue at the last minute. Dream sits with his back to the tree and his gaze faraway, wrapped in a cloak of dignity and black linen.

"Have a bite?" she offers. "I haven't licked all the way around."

Eris Discordia by AriadnesThread (American Gods, gen, PG)
Gods came to America by raft, by boat, by ship, even by plane. They travelled from tongue to tongue, were packed safely in the depths of suitcases, passed around at night to quiet sleepless children.

For Eris, it happened differently. But then, everything happened differently with Eris. She was brought ashore in dusty, leather bound books, stuffy academic journals and in the minds of stuffier professors. She might have come more quickly if it hadn't been for the ship wrecks, the boxes dropped into harbours, the professors lost in the pleasures of the port, but discord was in her nature. Discord was her nature.

The More You Fight Them by
jai (Umbrella Academy, gen, PG)
Allison beamed. "I turned Klaus into a girl."

Vanya gaped at her for a moment, then put her violin down. "You did what?"

"It's awesome," Allison said. "I bet he has boobs and everything. Somebody better get pictures."

Prize by fiercelydreamed (Polly and the Pirates, Meg/Archie, PG)
Archie's palms prickled with a cold sweat. He called upon all the lessons of his upbringing to keep from wiping them upon his vest. "And how do you imagine I can aid in the recovery of your ship from Fortunato Guzzi?"

Stepping back toward the center of the gondola, she shook her head in a motion that sent her long braid snapping like a whip over her shoulder, and Archie found himself staring down the polished barrel of his own pistol. "Why, ransom, of course," said the pirate queen.

Five ways Hope didn't convince Curtis and Newbie to have a threeway by
petra (Twitch City, Hope/Curtis/Newbie, R)
Hope frowned, which she knew made her look sulky and unattractive, but she was too mad to smile at them. "I'd like to make love. If it wouldn't get in the way of your schedule."

"Okay," Newbie said, and nudged Curtis. "You've got this one on tape, anyway."

"True," Curtis said, and shucked his pants off.

The Amazing Adventures of Hat Guy and the Girl Who Stole His Hat by loneraven (XKCD, Hat Guy/Girl, PG-13)
They spend a month living in a Pasadena basement. It's a short-term thing, until they get enough money to move on. They wait tables, and go around wearing signs saying "Will Fix Computer For Food", and sometimes, when yet another guy says something about girl geeks or girl gamers or girl anything, they get a bit of extra cash when they promise not to tell anyone how far up his ass the stiletto went.

Wandering by hetrez (Anthrpomorphic, gen, G)
"Hello!" said Moon, as the comet rushed back into view. It had just learned to speak, and was very proud of itself.

"Hello!" said the comet.

"Hello!" said Moon again.

"Er, hello." The comet sounded slightly less sure. Then it brightened. "Hello, Earth."

You can come and talk to me at Dreamwidth too!
