Question for you crafty folk

Here's the thing... I want grommet curtains, but I don't want to make them. IKEA sells some very plain ones. Could I just sew on a patterned fabric on top of it? I'd leave a border on the top (and maybe on the bottom for balance) so I won't have to deal with cutting out circles and etc.

Will that work? Can it possibly be that simple? Can I sew fabric on an existing curtain?
