Depressing News

There was a fourth oil spill in under 2 months, this time in the Rhine River of Germany. This time, it was about 2000 liters of fuel. The other spills, in case you're not familiar with the stories, were in the San Francisco Bay, the Yellow Sea, and the Black Sea. The Black Sea spill and the San Francisco Bay spill were within days of each other, and the Black Sea spill was by far the worst of all of them. I don't understand how there can be so many in so little time.

Pakistan's prime minister, Bhutto, was assasinated in a suicide bombing. She was a strong advocate for democracy in Pakistan, and Pakistan's first female prime minister. She was attacked while speaking at a political campaign rally. Many supporters are blaming President Musharraf, Bhutto's main political opponent in the upcoming elections. Rehman Malik, Bhutto's security advisor, has said that she was shot in the chest and the neck by the attacker, who then blew himself up. At least 20 others were killed in the attack. Malik also said, "We repeatedly informed the government to provide her proper security and appropriate equipment including jammers, but they paid no heed to our requests."

Perhaps you remember that recently, Musharraf ordered martial law and suspended the country's constitution, just before their supreme court was to rule whether Musharraf was eligible for reelection while remaining their military chief. Bhutto, who recently returned from an 8 year exile, publicly criticized him for this and urged him to reinstate their constitution.
