Coffee Wars

“What the hell is that?”

The barked words made Jared shudder. He’d worked up for weeks to finally ask Jensen out on this coffee date. Days of sitting next to him in class and chatting and staring while trying not to be obvious and obsessing over Jensen’s lips and eyes and well, everything.

Admittedly this date so far wasn’t going that well. To begin with, Jared had been a nervous wreck since they’d met up and had hardly been able to string three words together without swallowing his own tongue. Jensen’s sudden and blatant rudeness, however, cut through his nerves like a knife. “You don’t have to say it with such disdain.”

“I thought you said you were getting me coffee.” Jensen did the one eyebrow up trick that Jared was at once disgusted with and crazy jealous over.

“This is a salted caramel mocha with extra whipped cream and caramel dribble.”

Jared was gifted with another over-the-top outraged facial expression from Jensen. How did he do that?

“There are about five words wrong in what you just said. The greatest of which is that nowhere in there is there even mention of coffee!”

Jared sighed. It was him. Had to be. Perfectly nice guys, previously polite in all ways turned to douchebags the second the word date came up. It’s just … this time. Damn, he’d been hopeful. “There’s espresso in here. As there is in virtually everything this coffee shop sells. You know, most people would just say ‘thank you’.” Jared’s patience was lost. They were in college for Pete’s sake. Money was tight and this drink cost a small fortune. Not to mention it was delicious beyond all measure.

“Salt? In what universe is that appropriate in coffee?”

Oh for heaven’s sake, it didn’t matter how good looking Jensen was … this couldn’t really be worth it. Everyone said the thing to do these days is just ask someone out for coffee. Quick and relatively cheap way to get to know someone better. Figures he’d find the one guy in the entire campus for which this is complicated.

“The salt is part of the caramel. It’s actually quite good when blended with the chocolate-“

“Chocolate? So it’s a hot chocolate? I thought you were getting me a coffee?”

“No. It’s not a hot chocolate. It has chocolate in it along with … “ Jared ran his hand through his hair exasperated.

“Okay, tell you what,” He took a slow sip of the beverage himself hoping the sweet warmth would temper his rising anger. “This will be mine. I’ll go back and get you another drink.”

Jensen looked irate. What the fuck? Seriously, what the fuckity fuck was wrong now?

“You drank it.”

“Well, yes, you said you didn’t want it.“

“No. I didn’t. I merely asked for an explanation as to what it was. To tell the truth, it sounded … interesting.”

Red flashed before Jared’s eyes. Enough. “Okay. Jensen, look, I … we got along in class for the five minutes we spoke a day and I thought maybe. But clearly I was wrong. Why don’t we just forget-“

The corners of Jensen’s lips started to tilt up and his eyes started to twinkle in that way that made Jared first notice him in the first place and before he could say another word Jensen was laughing. Rich and deep and so sexy Jared had to swallow. Jared went from mad to stupefied in seconds flat.

“I’m sorry, dude. I probably could have kept it up longer but I was afraid you’d start throwing punches next.”

Jared stared. He even looked around briefly to see if someone was secretly filming him or something. Because. What?

“I’m just playing with you. Thanks for the coffee. Actually, a salted caramel mocha sounds great. You finish that one and I’ll go buy another plus maybe a cookie or something to make up for what I did.”

“So you’re not a jerk?” Jared asked still not sure of himself.

Jensen laughed. “Well, that’s debatable. I just … dunno. You were so nervous. Not like you were in class and I just wanted to get you smiling again.”

Jared couldn’t help himself and felt the dimples on his cheeks deepen as his smile brightened. “I was nervous. I mean, you’re … “

“You are, too,” Jensen said back earnestly and Jared couldn’t help the slight blush that heated his face.

“Chocolate Macadamia,” he told Jensen as he stood to get his coffee.

Jensen smiled brightly back at him. Watching as Jensen’s tight butt sauntered away toward the counter Jared took another sip of the sweet concoction. There were two ways of looking at what just took place. Sure, it was a little douchy to fool with Jared like that. But also that was a lot of effort to get Jared to not feel nervous. He felt warm by more than the drink.

He was plotting his revenge before Jensen even had a chance to pay and had to smile to himself by how absolutely calm he felt.
