So, I saw Splice this week, having read review after review (Including one from
handful_ofdust ) talking about how thought provoking, fascinating, and well executed a movie it was and I thought "huh. I guess it's NOT as fucking stupid and rote as the trailers make it out to be." Apparently some REALLY BAD THINGS happen in it and it caused a lot of polarizing reactions, but that just made me far MORE interested, and last night I got 3 friends together to see it and...well, it's difficult to say I enjoyed it because I don't think that's what it was ever really trying for. Splice strikes me as the sort of film out to push buttons and force you to think about your reactions, and not the sort of film in any way looking to create "thrills." That said, I have not in a very, very long time seen such a polarizing film, and I don't think I can in any honesty recommend it to anyone. Mostly because it DOES push so many buttons that - particularly the big OMGRAPE button which squicks the hell out of a lot of people - make it nearly impossible for a lot of people to separate the upset from the intellectual deconstruction that the story seems to be aiming for. And I understand that. It disappoints me, but I understand that. I think it's a lot of overreacting and flailing, but I get where it's coming from. What I DON'T understand or respect, is the comment that
yuki_onna put forth that for some reason, she (and many others) feels it was unreasonable to not give some sort of warning in all the reviews that OH DEAR, SOME REALLY UGLY BAD THINGS HAPPENED IN THE FUCKING MONSTER MOVIE.
Bitch, please. Complain that it hits your buttons, and you don't like that. Complain that you feel it's gratuitous and that it feels sexist (which I'll happily argue against, but that's a different can of worms) if you really have to. But if you're going to bitch that someone didn't WARN you that you might get bothered by the movie which is at the very least out to shock you, then I am going to call you a whiny little ass who needs to sit down and be quiet. And I'm SUPER irritated by all the hordes of people who are writing the movie off based upon the one angry, (in my opinion) super overreacting review by the aforementioned blogger who I feel has grossly misrepresented the film.
Personally, I found the film fascinating, thought provoking, and entertaining in ways I normally don't experience from the film media, and I am very glad it got a wide release and (as a result) that I got to see it. However, do not see this movie if you have even the SLIGHTEST of rapesquicks, or if you simply have no interest in having a story stare you in the face and demand thought about things that make you intensely uncomfortable.
