Something you really haven't seen before.

Yesterday life wasn't coming to me, so I came to it. Why not? What else? Distraction was imparative. I got out of work around 1 and fueled up for a lone gunman type journey to Syracuse to see Brokeback Mountain. I figured I was pulling teeth trying to get someone to go with me, so I may as well suck it up and take myself on a date. Jury's in...and I'm a darn good time. The details are inconsequential.

After seeing this film I'm wishing I had pulled the teeth, because there's a lot to think about afterwards that would also be nice to talk about. It was the exact right time for a movie like this because male-male relationships are a part of life, but still have an uncomfortable edge where most of us don't really know what's up there. (The same thing could not be properly repeated with a female saga because there's too much wiggle room for it to turn into smut.) Somehow, this shows that we do still respect the sanctity of something. I actually sat in my seat and blushed. I wondered if anyone was looking at me. I was captivated. I was uncomfortable. I felt the way I imagine my grandparents did when they first saw films in color, films with explicit content. It's an amazing feeling to be shocked during a decade where I thought it impossible. Truth be told I remember the movie a lot less than I do the experience, but maybe that's the point. For the first time in my life I really feel like I've seen something I've never seen before. It's a scuff your shoes and say "yeah..." kind of moment.

I was rooting for Mr. Phoenix to nab the Oscar this year for his preformance, seeing as he went insane for a spell for it...but Heath Ledger might steal it from him. I can't stay I'd be completely heartbroken, though if it were me handing them out I'd print off two this year. Thing is, Heath Ledger is never Heath Ledger in this movie. He is consistantly a character, flawlessly unlike himself. There is no trace of movie star in him, no moment where you can blame him for a slap back to reality. Boy delivers and he deserves the recognition of his peers for taking a chance like this one. And fuck...it was a real shot in the dark, this was.
