Sometimes you just don't want to overhear

I just stopped in at 7-11 where there's an ATM for my credit union to deposit a check. As I was getting out of the car, I heard one of the two guys sitting in the next car say in dead seriousness, "do you want to rape her?"

Just before that moment, a young woman had passed in front of our cars to enter the store.

I was absolutely freaked out. I didn't know if I had overheard them talking about someone else, whether they were serious, whatnot. But I kept scanning the store for all the women in it.

When I exited the store, I saw that the aforementioned girl was walking away with an older, weather-beaten man. They were on foot.

I still don't know if what I overheard was serious or if it was about her, but I told her exactly that. Better to be alarmist and safe than sorry. She was very appreciative.

The guy in the car shot me a look. I made sure he didn't follow me as I drove away. Deep breath.
