A UK student was hospitalized in critical condition after an early morning shooting in downtown Lexington Thursday.
An apparent botched robbery attempt led to the shooting, which happened outside a home at the corner of Wilson Street and Elm Tree Lane just after 1 a.m. The police report of the incident says that the victim, identified as John Mattingly, 23, of Marion County, opened the door and stepped outside, at which time a male black suspect armed with a gun entered the residence and demanded cash from the residents inside. The suspect struck the facial area of another male occupant inside the residence, causing minor injuries.
As the suspects fled from the area, gunshots were heard, and police arrived at the scene to find a Mattingly lying in the road. Police say he'd been shot in the head. He was rushed to UK Hospital, where at last check he remained in critical condition.
The unidentified man who was struck in the face was also taken to the hospital.
The suspects are described as a black male, late 20's to early 30's, shaved head, no facial hair, 5'10"-6'0", average build, and a second black male, with short hair in cornrolls, mustache and goatee, 5'10"-6'0", average build and armed with a handgun.
